Harrow St Mary's CC Ladies v Actonians Cricket Club Womens 1st XI on Sun 16 May 2021 at 1.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 1
Match report
It was typical British weather...something that we could rely on...rain with a hint of sunshine 🌞 ...ahhh reliability
Something else happened that we have come to rely on as well but we'll get to that later 😉
So we all turned up on time* (ahem ahem) and Aoife got excited about some cows on the way in. We then proceeded to stand in the rain for 20 minutes talking about how Emily would rather be playing football (#priorities). At this point no one could even fathom the thought of a game of cricket happening but like I said...British weather. The sun came out, the birds started singing and people started tanning/burning. It was cricket time.
Cap won the toss and chose to field (which according to Emily is grounds for Cap winning woman of the match) and we took the field in glorious sunshine which remained for the duration of the HSM innings. Gio and Peck started off with some tight overs with Peck's final figures being 0-8. Gio being the star of the early season continued her form and achieved figures of 2 -22 from her 4 overs (seriously get this girl in your fantasy team - she almost even smiled once!) Riya also took up the mantle to show the oldies how the youngsters do it and bowled with great patience and accuracy. Unlucky not to get a wicket but finished with 0 -17. The combination of Rio upped our standards in the field with great commitment and intensity with Riya running out HSMs top scorer allowing us to keep the oppo to under 100. Aishah also got 2-20 and Maz rolled back the years with some amazing boundary fielding and figures of 1-24. Although at one point we feared for the 75 year old when she seemed to take flight after sliding to stop the ball on the boundary 🤣 Anyhoo...all's well that ends well and we came off the field with no major injuries and a total we were quietly confident that we could achieve.
As we came of the field and sat down to eat Aoife's hummus crisps, the heavens opened. But it was all good. We were under the marquee and the batters had helmets/ a cap on. Cap opened the inning with Keely and our quietly confident run chase had begun.
"Oh but dear writer" I hear you exclaim! "What about the other reliable event that took place??" ...Well dear readers worry not! For I will explain!
So everyone knows and loves our dear Captain right? Good old Katie Davies, a leader on and off the pitch! Our Knight in shining armour...battle worn armour that has no chinks! Except for one...which leads to the next. You guessed it folks! Cap was out LBW yet again and she didn't agree with the umpires decision either! Good old reliable 👌 Cap made 8 and decided she was done for the day so came back to keep the scorer company. On to the field strode our Irish import who hit a lovely shot for 4 and then a quick single. But then she heard the cows moo as if they were calling her so she packed it in and came back too.
That left it to the most experienced in the team. Marilyn and Keely batted beautifully from overs 5 -15 showing us all how it should be done. Lovely shots for 4 and quickly run singles kept the momentum going. Unfortunately Keely got out for 29 which left us about 30 odd to get in 5 overs. In came Aishah Bolt who "ran" singles like her life depended on it and nothing like she was almost keeling over ready to die 👀 keeping Maz on strike for the majority of the balls left was a stroke of genius as she smacked the balls to the boundary easing the pressure. The last over arrived with A's needing 5 off 6 balls. For a full playback please be sure to check out Actonians Instagram which has a very helpful live of the last over. In summary Aishah and Maz ran singles that shouldn't have been there and Maz picked her fielder when she decided to sky one for the first time in her innings finishing with a match winning 37* (Aishah also got 6*). As I said before, All's well that end's well and A's made it over the line and into the final on June 6!
All in all, a great game of cricket and a great win!!
