Sheen Park 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 1.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report For those of you yet to experience the delights of 5th XI cricket you will not be aware of how we are informed of selection and ground details etc. Basically we are summoned to Professor Thistlethwaite’s laboratory on Saturday morning where he is currently trialling his new range of suppositories, the size of marrows, on some “willing” volunteers who all happen to be from Yorkshire! Anyway, this week we were told to seek the Common of Palewell which could be found in the Sheen area so we could take on Sheen Park 3s.

It was to be a friendly, it was a warm day so presumably a win the toss and bat sort of day. However Smithy was our stand in skipper and he is pre-programmed to say “we’ll have a bowl” after calling correctly. Joy! COVID King Kabir took the new ball with the skipper and both bowled tidily enough. The former induced a nick from their opener as wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the innings. At seven down their batsmen (or should that be batters) decided to batten down the hatches from overs 30 to 35 where barely a run was scored. Getting the breakthrough helped them as their number 10 came in and biffed a few boundaries to get them up to 132 off their 40 overs.

Billy and Bobby opened up for us and got us off to a decent enough start. However both got out when well set. Shams ran himself out having got a start too and our middle order batted like the thought the pitch was going to self destruct any minute! At 80 for 7 I found myself joined out in the middle by the Badger. He displayed his usual brand of resoluteness as well as his ability to keep the ball on the square! The run rate was always around 3 to 4 per over and as long as we stayed in we were always in with a good shout. At the other end I kept the scoreboard ticking over with a few nerdles and the odd boundary. When the last over started we needed 4 to win and with the Badger reacquainting himself with the middle of his bat, we won with 2 balls to spare.

Good for the 5s to gain their first win of the season albeit in a friendly. Need to sharpen up the fielding and and our batsmen need to adopt some Badger like stickability out in the middle. Schlong de la jour for the skipper for making us bowl first and as for man of the match? Will let the readers work that one out for themselves as modesty forbids me from saying!
