Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v West Harrow III on Sat 30 Jul 2022 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report Fresh from last weeks pulsating win over Perivale, the 4s took on West Harrow at Boddingtons in a 2nd v 3rd promotion clash. The pitch looked a lot better than more recent offerings at this ground and on what was another sultry summers day, it was no surprise that Slowheet decided to bat first. 2 Metre and Robbo (AKA as Mr Sullivan) opened the batting in what was presumably an attempt by the skipper to intimidate the oppo with shear size! Their new ball bowling was not overly threatening as those two took their opening stand beyond the 50 mark. It took a slightly bizarre dismissal to separate them when Robbo hammered the ball down to the bottom end and their fielder did well to not only stop it but actually held it on the bounce. Charlie set off for the single but Robbo seeing the ball was safely ensconced in the fielders mit sent him back. Unfortunately he did not make it back in time so we were 70-1. Piri came in and by now they had two experienced slow bowlers who did a good job in slowing the run rate right down. Piri struggled early on but both battled on until Robbo fell for 47. The foundations had been laid for our middle order biffers to give us that final push. Aneeq proved the most effective as he took full toll of the one over bowled by their returning opening bowler. 21 came off that over and Suuuuj also weighed in with a useful cameo was we were bowled out for 210 one ball shy of 46 overs. Slowheet had time to come in a show a new shot he has added to his repertoire. Not so much a reverse hit, more a reverse nerdle! It went about 10 yards from the wicket but there was a gap there and two were taken.

As some of us know taking on the role of tea provider is somewhat of a tall order but who better than 2 Metre Charlie to take it on?! What a great job he did too, cream teas included. Perhaps we should have bowled first? Anyway back to the action and their innings got off to an extraordinary start. Andrew G bowled the first ball to their left handed opener who smoted the leg side full bunger straight to Suuuj on the cow corner boundary (the wily skipper placed him there for this batsman). Unfortunately Suuuj, who is bucket hands usually, failed to grab the chance. However in Slowheet’s first over the same batsman tried clobbering him to cow and this time Robbo took the catch. Bizarre cricket. Thereafter we kept chipping away with wickets being taken on a regular basis leaving them 74-5. Piri and Mann came on first change and both bowled well to maintain the pressure applied by the opening bowlers. Their buffer in chief came in at 7 and found an ally in the form of their keeper. They both rode their luck at times but ultimately their century partnership won them the game. Aneeq in particular was unlucky not bowl with more reward as the bat was beaten frequently. We got both out eventually but West Harrow got home by 3 wickets with 9 balls to spare.

We’ve had 2 games with these games and a tie and narrow loss have resulted. Could make the difference come the end of the season. We played pretty well to be fair and were just beaten by a decent side whose key performers did the business. Man of the match goes to Piri for his all round display with mentions in despatches for Robbo and Aneeq. Schlong de la Jour? Let’s give it to Slowheet for his Freudian Slip when trying to position Rakesh at 3rd man. “Come on Ronit’s shoulder” was the call.
