Actonians Cricket Club Under 13's Girls v Harpenden on Sun 01 May 2022 at 10.00am
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
*** Pre-amble ***
After several weeks of indoor training, club emails and a first training session the previous Friday, the pre-season anticipation came to an end as girls club kicked off their season with an under 13s match at home to Harpenden.
We had a full set of umpires and scorers and both teams were there on time which, from the point of view of the team managers, always counts as a victory.
The weather was cloudy but mild, with some unexpected drizzle appearing towards the end of the match.
*** The Match ***
Abbie, the new team captain, won the toss and chose to bowl. Hannah bowled the team’s first over of the season which contained five dot balls. One of her deliveries reared up and rattled the cage of wicketkeeper Abbie’s helmet, but after a quick check from umpire that Abbie was ok we proceeded with the game.
This first over set the tone for what was a very good bowling performance. The girls were consistently accurate against a solid Harpenden batting line-up, and gave them few chances to get easy runs. Alice probably had the standout bowling performance and bowled two Harpenden players in her first over, but all of the bowlers put in a creditable performance during the innings. No over conceded more than 6 runs and it was particularly pleasing that four of the girls (Alice, Freya, Valeria and Leah) took wickets. Indeed it would have been five if a clean-bowled by Hannah hadn’t been ruled out as a no-ball.
The fielding was generally pretty sharp with players running quickly to the ball and with some really good backing up. One reward for this was two run-outs from direct hits by Abbie and Leah which helped prevent the Harpenden from gathering momentum in the middle of the innings.
The Harpenden batters were definitely no pushover and scored a number of fours, but when Valeria got the sixth wicket in the twelfth over the score was 57 for 6 : with just one wicket to get Actonians were looking well on top. We thought Hannah had finished the innings in the following over when she clean-bowled the final batter, but the delivery was deemed to have been a no-ball due to being above waist height. The final Harpenden partnership was determined and obdurate and they added a further 20 runs before Leah got her first wicket with an LBW.
A target of 78 wasn’t formidable but it could have turned out to be quite difficult if we had given away a couple of early wickets. Harpenden bowled well and showed plenty of energy in the field, but Molly and Hannah got us off to a good start with a partnership of 26 in the first 4 overs. It was pleasing that that our early momentum came from some really sharp and disciplined running. Once Molly was out she was replaced by Valeria who hit our first four to the fine leg boundary, with the ball falling just a couple of yards short of being a six. This second partnership added 45 runs in five overs and proved to be decisive. Valeria batted aggressively and hit several fours to be the game’s top scorer when she was out for 26 in the 9th over.
The winning runs came in the following over, and both sides agreed to play out the remainder of the innings so that everyone got a chance to contribute. The girls continued to run sharply between the wickets and finished up with a very creditable 28. A shout out should go to Emily who batted for 14 deliveries and scored 5 runs even though she has never faced a hardball in a match or a practice
*** In the Final Analysis ***
Very well done to the girls for a really good performance. The bowling was consistently accurate and in terms of extras compared well with some of the totals clocked last season by the older teams. The fielding was generally pretty sharp, although but we need to work on (a) walking in and (b) being more vocal in the field (Harpenden set us a good example on this one). The running between the wickets was really sharp and helped make sure we were always well above the required scoring rate. It was also good to see a burgeoning team spirit – this is a good thing in its own right, but will also help with the quality of their performance in forthcoming games.
There were a number of debuts which should be called out. Emily was playing her first game for the club and gets a shout out for some lively fielding and a really good batting performance. For a several of the girls this was their first hardball match, so well done to them. And of course congratulations to Kate for whom this was her first game as team manager. It was also great to see a good crowd of parents and relatives (and also a dog) providing vocal support.
Thank you to Harpenden who were friendly and sporting opposition. We’ll be looking forward to playing them again.
Thanks also to the umpires (Scott Trainor) and scorers (Karina and Gio Tyrer).
Player of the match : the performances were good throughout the team, but Valeria was the standout with a wicket and top-scoring with 26.
Next game is on 11th May against Eastcote.
