Actonians Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Match report from the boundary by Anna and Alex Ebdon

An early start and an hour-long drive along the restricted M4 finally brought us to West Ilsley Cricket Club. A lovely ground in a really lovely village with a very warm welcome. They even made coffee for us, which was a nice touch.

First thing we all noticed was a distinct slope to the pitch. But if it’s good enough for Lords, it’s good enough for us. Certainly fielders on the low side of the ground were in for a bit of ball-chasing today.

So to the action. Abbie won the toss (to much cheering from the team) and elected to field first.

Hannah opened up the bowling and once finding her range bowled accurately and with threat. Threat that became realised as she clean bowled an opening West Ilsley batter with the last delivery of her first over. A great start.

Alice then doubled the pressure, hitting the top of off stump with her first delivery to take another wicket. After a handful of runs in the over she then had the perfect finish, clean bowling another with an off stump clatter. Excellent line bowling.

Things continued to go well for Actonians, with Hannah keeping up pressure and good fielding from the team. Some good hands from Hannah on a risky extra run attempt from the batters got the ball into Abbie’s gloves to claim a sharp run out. Abbie’s glove work was good all round once again. Valeria and Emma came is as the bowling change and both kept the batters honest, keeping scoring opportunities low with good, straight bowling. Meanwhile, a huge red kite swooped low above the pitch, but fortunately no children were carried off and play continued.

Next up with the ball was Freja Davies-Baker and with the second to last delivery of her over she bent back leg stump to claim another wicket for Actonians. Next delivery – another wicket! She was on for a hat-trick, but it was the end of the over and (spoiler alert) she didn’t get to bowl again in the match. Bad luck Freja, unfortunately it doesn’t carry across games (despite what I said at the time) so you’ll just have to repeat the feat in the next game! Great bowling.

Caitlin and Molly completed the Actonians bowling attack, both with good rhythm and direction. Molly finished the innings by knocking back off stump once again to have West Ilsley all out for 60 having batted just 11 overs of their potential 20.

An excellent bowling performance all round, evidenced by the number of wickets taken clean bowled. Lovely stuff.

So it was going to be a pretty easy Actonians win, right? Good batters, loads of overs to make a lowish total. No need to rush it. No problem.

Well, we all know cricket better than that.

It certainly looked straightforward at first in the Actonians run chase. Valeria and Caitlin opened things up with some nice batting and running – special mention to Valeria’s good calling within that. Valeria regularly clipped the ball to square leg for runs, and hit a four with a lovely on drive. Caitlin played some very nice shots and kept the scoring ticking along well. Next the unmistakeable sound of a ball hitting plum middle of a bat heralded a big hit from Valeria for four to mid on. She was on fire. But one attempt too many at a big hit unfortunately doused the flames as her wicket fell, bowled out by straight one.

Enter Emma to the crease, with a clip across her legs gaining four runs to the square leg boundary. Nothing was going to stop the Actonians charge. The crowd even started to become concerned that the match would end before the pub across the road opened. What on earth would we do then?

But in true English cricket form, things were about to take an interesting twist in over six.

Caitlin fell caught and bowled. Abbie was then given out next delivery for a feather through to the wicketkeeper. And Molly’s wicket completed a West Ilsley hat-trick as a straight delivery bowled her out. An excellent over from Bea on the West Ilsley team. You’ve got to applaud a hat-trick!

The Actonians ship needed steadying. The rapid fall of wickets had left the team a little short of batters padded up and ready to go in. But in strode Alice to team up with Emma in the bid to get things back on track.

And they did exactly that. Some confident, unflustered batting and good running from both got the runs flowing again. A nice drop and run from Emma showed that you really don’t need to try to whack the ball every time to score. Emma’s lovely clip to square leg brought another four runs, with a passing cyclist kindly giving the signal on the move. And Emma’s straight drive brought the score past the required 61 to win, within the 9th over.

Some great batting and a bit of drama along the way to keep things spicy. All within the surroundings of English village idyll. What’s not to like?

Congrats Actonians on advancing in the Cup and maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.
