Match report Old Actonians secure winning draw thanks to Patel double act

Middlesex Championship Divsion 1: Old Actonians (253/8 – 4 points) drew with Turnham Green & Polytechnic (182/7 – 1 point).

Old Actonians 1st XI were unable to achieve victory on their visit to local rivals Turnham green & Polytechnic, but a flurry of wickets from brothers Jinesh and Sandip Patel ensured that Old A’s recorded a winning draw at Fullers Sports Ground.
Home side Turnham Green needed 147 runs to win with nine wickets in hand when the Patel brothers, both graduates of Actonians’ colts section, began their assault on the middle order. Medium-pacer Sandip took three for 53, while the leg spin of the younger Jinesh yielded three for 29.
Jinesh Patel removed Turnham Green’s opener and best batsman on the day, Matthews, for 79 as Dave Mahoney took a smart stumping. Sandip had the Chiswick side’s number three, Lush, caught by Pile for 44 but the A’s did not leave themselves enough overs as the batsmen turned defensive to save the draw.
In the end, even the winning draw total of 208 in 45 overs was out of Turnham Green’s reach as they finished on 182 for seven.
Earlier, Old Actonians had been put into bat and two colts again came to the fore. Skipper Chris Falconer (72) and keeper Dave Mahoney (49) made the most of a short boundary on one side and a lightning outfield in an opening partnership of 114.
There were further useful contributions from the middle order — Jinesh Patel, Craig Nel, Raj Puranik and Scott Ensom all got into their 20s and got out — with the highlight of the second half of the innings Puranik’s straight six that broke a drain pipe on the pavilion.
For Turnham Green, spinner Ali Pir was the outstanding performer with the ball, taking seven for 59 to keep the A’s in check.
His frequent wickets meant Old Actonians could never truly accelerate. Perhaps wary of last week’s defeat when Wycombe House chased down their total of 231, Old A’s batted through to 55 overs for 253 for eight.
After three games, Old A’s are third, one place ahead of Turnham Green, with one win, one draw and one loss.
