Highgate 4 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 01 Jun 2019 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 58 runs
Match report
After getting off the mark last week with a win over Ealing, the 3s made their way up to Mill Hill this week to take on promoted Highgate. With the skipper watching the Kiwis in Cardiff, VC was again at the helm. On arrival I noticed the oppo did not look the most youthful side I’ve seen (I was able to tell our lads youth and vitality was on our side this week!) and I thought let’s get this lot into the field for 3 hours.......well I lost the toss and after a fair amount of hesitation, they decided to bowl. Now have to decide who opens with Arkwright in 2 Metres absence? Piri was duly nominated to provide a platform for the fancy Dans due to come in lower down. Usual instructions were given. Have a look, take your time, assess the pitch and try and be there for the first drinks break at 15 overs. The pitch was ok but the odd one shot through a bit, the odd one popped but there were short straight boundaries to take advantage of. One of their opening bowlers got good shape away from Piri and into Andrew, while at the other end, a guy nicknamed the Undertaker dobbed away not giving too much away. However 65 without loss at drinks, happy days! More of the same please. Highgate tried a couple of new bowlers at one end and both struggled to find that Mehaffy like consistency! Their skipper did however induce a check drive from Andrew that was dollied back to him and that wicket fell at 84. A great start with Andrew missing out on a half century. This brought in Jordan at 3 who did look scratchy to start with especially with a bat that appeared shy of a middle! Meantime the Undertaker kept plodding in and in his 12th and final over he was called for a no ball by Umpire Malik. Admittedly it was his first and it did appear to upset him somewhat. The exchange with Umpire Malik went something like this:
Umpire Malik- No ball
Undertaker- how on earth is that a no ball old chap?
Umpire Malik- I think you find your front foot was over the line
Undertaker- far be it for me to question you old boy but.......
Umpire Malik- do you know a good banker?
Anyway the United Nations were called in and Kofi Annan calmed things down. The Undertaker completed his over and Piri soon got out falling LBW for 49. He deserved the 50 but what a great job he had done for the team. 140 for 2 with 17 overs to go. Shahid joined Jordan and they got themselves in before Jordan unleashed 4 boundaries in one over off their spinner (he had changed his bat by now). They took their partnership past 100 before Shahid joined the 40+ club and Jordan was run out on the last ball of the innings for 79. 267 looked a good score on that pitch and Highgate we’re going to have to bat well to challenge it (although one of them did claim it was par).
Tea was very good and included fish fingers but we could indulge too much because we had a game to win. Piri took the new ball with Kier and they faced two openers who were both clearly looking to be positive. It was a good contest as ball beat bat and ball went to boundary. There was also some excellent fielding to back the bowlers up. Eventually Piri found the edge of the number 2. Pretty big nick too but not given. The openers put on 74 before Piri had the other batsman caught by Sahil. Shaun then replaced Kier and he struck twice in one over bowling out their numbers 3 and 4. Sahil soon replaced Piri and he started to unfurl some carnage of his own. From 134 for 3, Highgate were reduced to 166 for 8 with all five wickets going the way of the well coiffured man! The highlight was the snaring of the reluctant to walk opener who skied one to Jordan who took an excellent catch. Shahid took two catches himself (complete with looks of shock) and we did encounter some resistance when the Undertaker joined his fellow opening bowler for the last wicket stand (they had 10). The number 9 actually struck the ball well and was well set on 40 when the Undertaker failed to respond to his call for a single. I think he spilled some embalming fluid on his legs......but anyway he didn’t budge and I was able to throw the ball to Sahil at the bowlers end to complete the denouement of the match.
A very good and satisfying win then by the 3s. Set up by a fine batting display by the top four and finished by a great effort in the field by everyone. Man of the match a toss up between Jordan and Sahil. Schlong de la Jour? Well Aneeq didn’t disappoint on that score again. Not for his exchange with the Undertaker but for ignoring my request to cut out the quicker ball after he bowled his first over. Next ball, a quicker one, over pitched and swatted for a maximum. Aneeq I also know best....... The 3s now have back to back wins but a thought one coming up next week against Winchmore Hill.
