Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Twickenham V on Sat 08 Aug 2020 at 12.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 10 runs

Match report The 4s entertained Twickenham this week which happened to be our opponents for the first game of the season. Boddingtons looked an absolute picture. Well if the picture you are referring to is the aftermath of a bush fire! The oppo won the toss and we were surprisingly inserted in scorching conditions.

Billy Bunter opened up with The Big Show and with the help of extras (who happens to be having a great summer) we got off to a brisk start. A promising opening stand was cut short when Billy was adjudged LBW by Shakoor Rana’s nephew, Zain. I then came in at 3 and got off to an uncharacteristic quick start. Twickenham then brought on a change bowler who unwisely pitched everything mid pitch which allowed The Big Show to wait on his stumps and bully some blows into cow corner. Indeed Aneeq seemed set fair for a half century when he got bowled by one that kept low. Bilal of the Butt variety then got out for a rare failure but Zain maintained the scoring rate with some lusty blows. I got out to a sharp low catch for 27 but at 130 for 4 with over 20 overs left we looked like posting a sizeable total. However our lower order clearly decided it was not a day to hang around and we proceeded to get bowled out for 147. To be fair their spinners did a great job to get them back into the game and a team hat trick helped their cause. Young Charlie got bowled, Rob Carrigan hit one into the covers and got run out having been sent back by Corporal Jones, and then the Preston Wall, who was still putting his pads on when he should have been walking out to bat (optimistically he applied sun cream too. How long did he think he would bat?), was bowled first ball leaving one alone that hit middle stump! Once Roheet nicked off attempting a customary walking block, the innings was completed.

The skipper took the new ball (a VKs special that anyone can move off the straight) with Charlie Soden as we struggled to bowl a consistent line. However they did take 3 early wickets to leave Twickenham in a bit of trouble. The Preston Murali came on and in his first over took a wicket that certainly had more than hint of Coutts about it. A slow loopy delivery that one of their youngsters played all over and around. Richard picked up another one and Rob Carrigan at the other end weighed in with two of his own. This left Twickenham 98 for 7 and seemingly up against it. However their young number 8, having been lucky to survive a run out appeal, took a liking to the spin twins as he carted anything on leg stump to Aneeq Corner. At 134 for 7 the game was drifting from us but up stepped Rob to clear up the tail, claim a fiver for, and earned us another hard fought victory by 10 runs.

Man of the match has to go to Rob for his match winning spell with a special mention for Jonesy who kept admirably in the face of a good deal of legside filth. In addition he took control of the sanitising breaks to ensure copious volumes of liquid was supplied to all. If he’s that generous with the lube........his engine will always run smoothly! Schlong de la jour? A collective award to the bottom four batsmen who all blobbed and secured an Audi!
