Harrow IV v Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 15 Aug 2020 at 12.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 26 runs

Match report It was one of those days were we thought we would turn up, get a few overs of cricket in, watch helplessly as the rain poured down, before heading off back to home to hear our nearest and dearest say “what was the point of that then?”. However despite the permanent grey skies we managed to complete this match at Harrow albeit ending up 2nd in this 2 horse race.

Corporal Jones was in charge for this one with the skipper pulling up lame the day before. He won the toss and invited the oppo to don their pads. The pitch looked pretty good and the outfield was enormous so presumably bowlers put the markers out! Jake and Rob Carrigan shared the new ball and the latter claimed an early wicket to pick up where he left off the week before. Jake struggled with his run up from the other end so he was replaced after a couple of overs by Omar. To be fair to our bowlers they did create ample opportunities to take wickets but the support they received from the fielders was not quite what they would have hoped for as David Gower might have put it. Just the 12 catches were shelled with only 2 players, Rob and Soairse, able to reflect on a drop free afternoon. Their young opener played some nice shots but was dropped about 6 times on his way to a half century. Harrow took their score to 76 before debutant Soairse came on and struck twice in quick succession. Soairse was unlucky to have their number 5 dropped early in his innings before going on to spoil her figures with some lusty blows. Eventually Asad got their opener who somewhat ironically was out hit wicket!

Wickets and dropped catches continued to occur at regular intervals as their innings eventually came to and end with a couple of run outs. The first a bizarre one when their batsmen thought he was standing in his crease when he wasn’t and then Jake showed us his goalkeeping prowess with a fine stop and throw to Jonesy who picked up it up on the half volley and ran out their last man. Overall our bowlers did well and as the skipper pointed out, we did create 22 chances to take wickets! Assad was the stand out with 12 economical overs taking 3-38. Jake also came back strongly to pick up a couple at the end.

181 was our target then as Billy Bunter and the Big Show took guard. Their opening bowler to be fair was quite sharp and presumably won’t be playing for their 4s for long. He soon trapped Aneeq leg before and broke Bilal’s resistance some time later. Having seen him off after a nine over spell we thought we could push on with the run chase. However the change bowler got it to wobble which certainly appeared to nobble our middle order. Bilal Butt nicked off before Malik came in and played what was an action packed 6 ball stay at the crease. Dropped off his first two balls, he hit 2 boundaries in his innings of 10 before getting caught off his sixth. Soairse did not quite keep a square cut down and was well caught at backward point and then the Fox was caught behind after getting himself in. Jake and Omer came and went and before we knew it we were 63 for 8 and our position was looking more perilous than your average Conservative Education Minister! However Corporal Jones was joined by Brigadier Block, one Rob Carrigan, and these two showed the sort of dogs of war grit the situation demanded. Stark contrast to their partnership last week that lasted one ball! Rob was eventually out with the score on 98 which brought in Asad who has to be one of the better number 11s in 4th team cricket. The partnership gradually grew until they hit one over for 20 and all of a sudden.......hello.......could they pull it off.....? Actually no they couldn’t but nonetheless it was a splendid stand of 57 which did have the oppo contemplating the unthinkable as we ended 25 runs short.

Another good game of cricket for the 4s then but no need to pinpoint where it went a bit awry! Man of the match to Asad for his fine all round effort with Corporal Jones again getting mentions in dispatches. His 37 not out included all the shots in his locker plus a couple borrowed from someone else’s! Schlong de la Jour....will have a rollover as Aneeq is due to provide me with ample ammunition at Teddington next week.
