Match report **** MATCH REPORT ****

This was the second game for the u13s and it was great that the excellent weather of the previous few days continued. Even though it was an evening game it was almost uncomfortably warm in the scorer box. I did have sympathy for the players who had been at the cricket camp all day and then played in the match.

As is always the case for the softball pairs game, each side started with 200 runs on the board, with 5 runs deducted for each wicket. Bushy arrived a couple of players short, so we lent them a couple of players to even up the numbers.
Bushy batted first, and it was a good reflection on some tight bowling that we restricted them to 5 runs in the first 3 overs and 15 in the first seven. The scoring picked up thereafter and the Bushy batting was neat and tidy, but without ever achieving sufficient momentum to post a really sizeable score.

The Actonians fielding had the very occasional mishap but, overall, was pleasingly sharp. This proved to be important as Bushy went for more runs in the second part of their 18 overs. Some risky running combined with sharp reactions in the field gave us four quick runouts in the later part of the innings. As in the previous u14 game, one of the runouts came from a direct hit a split second after a dropped catch : the quick reactions were pleasing to see, but we will need to ensure the girls remember that dropped catches don’t always have a happy ending 😊

Kalla and Meghan batted as a partnership in the latest part of the Bushy innings and moved things along with a top-scoring partnership of 16. The Bushy innings closed on a total of 276 which was reduced to 246 due to the six wickets claimed by Actonians.

Kalina and Emma gave the innings a quick start and we had reached after 215 after four overs. Thereafter the score kept ticking over nicely, not least because the running between the wickets was sharper than it has been in previous games. This is something that Tamlyn has worked on in the nets so it is good to see it bearing fruit.

We went past the target in the 11th over and the later batters kept things moving to make sure that we weren’t at risk of being dragged behind due to falling wickets. The innings closed on 282 (after wickets deductions).

Congratulations to all of the team for a good performance and the win. There are still things to improve of course. We conceded 34 bowling extras which means we still have to work on bowling accuracy, but it was good to see that the running and fielding was generally sharper than in previous games. This was reflected in the fact that we achieved four runouts without conceding any in our own innings. A shout-out to Edie for playing a few years above her age group and putting in a good performance. It was a solid all-round performance by the team, but we think player of the match goes to Kalina who top scored, ran and fielded with purpose, and who bowled three overs while conceding just eight runs.

As always, a thank you goes out to everyone who helped : Ana organised the game and ran the gate and Keely who umpired. Thanks to Chris Field for organising the team on the day and organising the pre-match training. A thanks goes to our opponents for playing the game in a sporting manner.

See you all at the next game.
