Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report **** MATCH REPORT ****

The u14 girls team made a welcome return on Monday, putting in a creditable performance against a strong Richmond side. Although they lost by eight wickets there was a lot to be pleased about, and it was great to see the team enjoying the game in perfect cricket weather.

On the sort of warm summer evening from cricket central casting , Actonians batted first. The game had started at five-thirty to ensure we had enough time to finish before the light went, but by the end of third over we had lost three batters for zero. With the score at 14 for 3 the chances of a late finish seemed fairly small. However Ria and Marina steadied the ship with Ria hitting several boundaries to keep the score moving. Once Ria had retired on 30 Marina kept the momentum going with help from Hellie. Mia and Siena brought the innings to a close with some solid running, and after 20 overs, Actonians had scored a respectable 103 for 6.

In response the Actonians attack bowled pretty well and were generally fairly accurate, conceding considerably fewer wides and no-balls than their opponents. However, after Actonians had taken an early wicket, an excellent second-wicket stand of 81 in 12 overs moved the game irreversibly in Richmond’s favour. A stump -rattling delivery from Marina saw the end of this partnership but Richmond were able to close out the game with a four at the end of the 16th over.

The most important thing is that it was great to have the girls team playing cricket again in this strangest of summers. While it was a shame to lose, Richmond deserved the win with some excellent performances. As we discussed in the post-match debrief there was plenty to be positive about, and we also agreed that one thing to learn from the match was the importance of the girls being more positive and decisive in their running between the wickets.
There were very good batting performances from Ria, with a not-out 30, and from Marina with an innings-rescuing 19. The bowlers were consistently accurate, and well done also to Mia for taking on the responsibility of captaincy and to debutants Siena and Leah. However the stand-out performance came from Emma who made her debut as a wicket-keeper and who put in an excellent performance.

See you all at the next game.
