Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 95 runs
Match report
**** MATCH REPORT ****
It was the second game of the season for the u14 team. With the downpours of the previous three days fading into memory, the game was played on a warm and slightly windy Actonians park.
The fact that the season is being run across the summer holidays has created recruitment challenges for the games. Over the last three days the squad varied in size from 6 to 10, but had settled on 8 by the afternoon of the game itself. Ealing kindly agreed to play it as a friendly and to lend us three fielders : they also suggested we play a full 20 overs regardless of how many wickets fell.
Ealing batted first and made rapid progress, passing 62 runs in the eighth over. Marina broke the partnership with a smart delivery but Ealing continued to score quickly and had reached 98-1 in the 13th over. Siena broke the second wicket partnership with a wicket in her bowling debut, and Actonians now managed to slow the flow of runs. Riya executed a smart runout with a direct hit, and Hala made a smart double-catch on her return to the side. Ealing finished with 133 for 4.
Actonians only had eight batters and so 134 was always going to be a stretching target. Ealing’s strong bowling line-up, combined with some risky running by the home team saw Actonians first innings end on 38 runs in the 9th over. Riya had 22 runs, but the rest of the team found it difficult to get away against some tight Ealing bowling. Because of the agreement to play the full 20 overs our batters all got a second go. In this slightly unorthodox second innings we had slightly more impact, with Marina hitting several boundaries in a noteworthy 30. While the result was never seriously in doubt we managed to make a creditable 85 by the end of the 20 overs.
Thank you to Riya for captaining, and to Selma and Hala for stepping into the team late in the day. Mentions should go Siena and Emma who shared the wicket-keeping role while also bowling a couple of overs each. Leah made a bowling debut in the team and, along with Lulu, bowled economically. Marina and Riya provided the bulk of the runs, while Hala made a strong catch on her return to the team.
Although this is a fairly sizeable defeat, we should bear in mind the scratch nature of the side. They kept a consistently positive attitude in what was a pretty tricky game to play. There are still plenty of things for the girls to work on in the coming weeks : the running between the wickets needs to be sharper, and Tamlyn has started building this into the nets practice. In the field there were some good patches, but still need to be sharper and louder. As always these are things we can work on.
As always, a thank you goes out to the match officials : Marilyn who scored, Aishar who umpired and Rebecca who supervised the gate to the ground. Also I would like to send a thank you to Ealing. Given how short we were of players, they were flexible and generous in doing everything they could to ensure that we had as even-sided a game as possible.
See you all at the next game.
