Actonians Cricket Club Won by 65 runs

Match report Wembley of course is the ultimate destination for certain sportsmen and women, alas cricket is not one of them! However it was the venue for me this week as I continued my descent down the club to play for Thistlethwaite’s Celebrity All Stars XI. Our esteemed leader was not actually there for the start time due to a mercy dash to pick up Aylon in deepest Surrey (apparently the Lamborghini wouldn’t start!). The upshot of a telephone call between the two skippers meant we were batting first in a 40 over a side game. Billy assumed the reins and elected himself to open the batting with me. The wicket was unsurprisingly damp but eminently playable with a tempting short boundary on one side. While one of their experienced opening bowlers dobbed effectively, the other one gave us a bit of width to play with as Billy got the scoreboard rolling with some belligerent blows. The sight of the skipper and Aylon arriving was certainly a welcome one as we continued to build on the opening partnership. Indeed it reached 74 before Billy played round a straight one and I followed soon after when somewhat harshly adjudged LBW to one I hit!

Raj, in at 3, played some nice shots before missing a full toss and Malik went first ball bowled by one that nipped back. That brought in our hat trick watchman, young Daniel McCarthy, who survived that ball with consumate ease. He then shared a good partnership with Soairse who played shots all round the park, including reverse hits, before unluckily getting run out at the non strikers end when the bowler got a touch on Daniel’s fierce straight drive. Nonetheless her knock of 32 had given our innings the impetus it needed. Next in one Alistair Slaughter. Just the man for some late innings biffing! His unbeaten half century lifted us to 203 which looked a useful total despite the short boundary. Daniel was run out on the last ball but showed plenty of promise in his first senior innings.

The two lefties, Raj and Aylon, took the new cherry and kept things pretty tight. Aylon struck twice in two balls to put Wembley on the back foot. First change bowlers Kabir and Sam (AKA S Rod) made the skipper look like the Preston Brearley as both struck in their opening overs. Sam got their useful opener with a short one that be spooned to Ali at mid on who took a decent catch low down. The Preston Murali was soon on for his 8 over spell as the game somewhat drifted along to it’s inevitable conclusion. I.E. a relatively comfortable win for us. Overall an enjoyable game of cricket well managed by “Brearley”. Still awaiting details of next weeks fixture........hold on....what’s that you say Robbo? Stoke Newington away on Hackney Marshes? WTF! Cheers mate!
