Actonians Cricket Club Won by 79 runs

Match report Last week at Wembley I got the call from my fellow opener, Billy, that “the blue shirt is in play” to make it clear the oppo had brought on some bloke to field for them as one of their youngsters was running late. It’s the level of cricket I’ve now found myself at? It turns out that Robbo felt I had more depths to explore by arranging a friendly at Hackney Marshes, on an artificial pitch! Just a hundred miles round trip then!

Anyway on arrival we could see their main square looked a decent place to play cricket. The outfield was well mown etc etc. The Preston Brearley made enquires as to the whereabouts of our wicket which turned out to be among the plethora of football pitches this bit of land is renowned for. The skipper won the toss and wisely decided to bat first as we had 9 men at the start time. Baxter was running late after rugby practice and Rob had a late call to play for the 4s. Robbo and Billy were sent in to the set the tone against their youthful newball attack. The artificial pitch wasn’t the best and it wasn’t the easiest to time the ball on. Plenty of runs came behind square as we got off to a more than acceptable start. The pair put on over 50 before Bilal was well caught at cover. This brought me in and I duly nicked off for a duck to make the journey that bit more worthwhile! Aneeq then came in and got the scoreboard moving with his customary lack of guile, panache, timing and talent but some effective biffing was just what the innings needed. Meantime off the pitch Sam Rodriguez arrived somewhat unexpectedly. S Rod had made his way all the way across London answering a late call up. Top work young man, top work! He was quite rightly asked to pad up straight away and went in after Aneeq tried one biff too many. Unfortunately his stay at the wicket was brief as he walked past a straight one and got stumped. Robbo held it all together at the other end and ended up with a fine knock of sevinty sivin!! Just say it with a Kiwi accent! There were useful knocks from Baxter and Sam Jarman at the back end and we ended up with a decent total on what was a slow outfield of 172.

One or two of our athletes took advantage of the cafe satisfying their nutritional needs with a burger and chips. Brearley had to buy a ball off the oppo and they came up with a magnificent looking Dukes ball. Cherry red with a prominent seam, the sort that Anderson and Broad have take a zillion wickets with. Sam and Aneeq opened up and set the tone taking early wickets. Aneeq in particular moved the ball which surely says more about the ball than his abilities! In truth the mainly young Stoke Newington side never really looked like mounting a serious challenge but we did bowl and field pretty well. Just about all catches were taken and Brearley ran someone out with a direct hit. Billy used the shelf on his belly to good effect to take two catches and Smithy dobbed well off a short run up.

Man of the match to Robbo but Man of the Day to S Rod for getting over to Hackney Marshes at such short notice. Schlong de la jour? A few candidates this week. Robbo of course for arranging the fixture, Brearley and Corporal Jones for going out to have a look at the wicket before the game. However the most pressing claim in my eyes was that man Aneeq for bowling in spikes on the artificial pitch! Where is Robbo sending the Thistlethwaite Celebrity All Stars XI next week? Theydon Bois! Don’t know where that is? Check the underground map. Central Line near Epping......
