Actonians Cricket Club 5th XI v Stoke Newington 4 on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 6 runs
Match report
Fresh from their friendly win over Sheen Park last week, the 5s were back at their new home, Gunnersbury Park to face Stoke Newington. My first visit time here since the hub was built and it has certainly transformed the place. Let’s be honest the only people who missed those old changing rooms were the Luftwaffe! Lack of shade is an issue though and a sizeable hole on the pitch caused a certain amount of consternation before the match. Thankfully it was just a tad wide of the wicket to be problematical.
With stand in skipper Smithy running a bit late due to the Jolly Boys outing to Edgbaston (expect some more positive results this week all not for COVID!), Roger did the toss. He lost but as the oppo decided to bat Smithy was happy. Adam “the Lesser” Trainor took the new ball and found both inconsistent bounce and the outside edge in the first over. I managed to shell two catches in the first two overs but it was not to prove too costly as both openers soon fell. However a decent partnership then followed which took them to a healthy 66 for 2. Time to unleash the Padre! Starting with a fine running catch by Mohsen on the boundary, William proceeded to run through their middle order on his was to a fine return of 5 for 31. Not so much turn but subtle variations of flight and guile I would say. At the other end Charlie Soden bowled a good spell of 6 overs which deserved some reward. Smithy came back on at the end and picked up the last 3 to end on a jug avoiding 4 for! That said he still bought a skippers jug so fair play.
126 to win then and we knew it was not going to be a stroll in the park on this pitch. Not a minefield but more than enough to keep a bowler interested. Katie and Bobby played sensibly and got us off to a decent start but both were undone by their tall first change bowler. Katie in particular was unlucky when a length ball kept very low and nipped back to boot. We continued to lose wickets at regular intervals with their slow left spinner somehow snaffling 3. Time to unleash the Padre again! Initially it didn’t start well when he ran out Malik and at 88 for 9 we were in deep doodoo! Smithy had joined him at the crease but he had that Dogs of War look about him. That over my dead body demeanour that only Smithy can portray. He squirted the ball (often uppishly) in various directions while Billy bunted the odd ball to the boundary. Slowly but surely the target came down and with 7 needed the winning post was in sight. However William clothed a full toss to mid on and we fell agonisingly short. Great effort by the last pair though.
The Padre had an interesting game to say the least. A 5 for, top scorer, dropped catch, ran someone out, almost won the game…..shoe in man of the match. Schlong de la jour? Despite his inspired purchase of Calippos at the tea break it has to go to Adam, who despite his name, was dreadful with the Biblical puns!,
