Winchmore Hill 6 v Actonians Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 03 Jul 2021 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report A real clash of the Titans this one. The bottom two in the bottom division met at the Paulin this week as we reached the mid point of the season. The Preston Brearley won the toss and decided to let Winchmore have a bat. The new ball was shared by Antonia (who swings it) and Smithy (who doesn’t!). Antonia found plenty of in swing but too often failed to use the facilities. Their two young openers did well to keep us at bay with the odd flourish to the boundary. Once Antonia found her length she did remove both with one bowled and the other a decent catch by Srodders at square leg. At the other end Smithy dobbed without looking very threatening but he eventually picked up a wicket the delivery after a suggested field change by the wily keeper! Their debutant at number 5 lived a charmed existence to start with as he dropped about 4 times but he started to play some nice shots before Padre Billy won a LBW decision bowling round the wicket to the right hander……. The Badger picked up a couple in his useful spell and with the help of some optimistic/ poor running we executed a couple of run outs to bowl them out for 110 which looked below par on a decent track.

Billy and Bobby (who sound more like a CBeebies programme than an opening partnership) opened the batting but Bobby was soon stumped by their young keeper standing back. As Ron Atkinson would have said, he wasn’t “in the wide awake club”! Billy got the scoreboard moving with some typical biffs to leg although I do recall a cover drive in there somewhere. He fell for 22 which brought Antonia in to join Katie. Both looked in good order until the former got caught at short 3rd man and Katie was triggered by the Smithanator. Katie found a quiet corner, said dammed and blast a few times no doubt, and then rejoined us once she had regathered her poise! At 45 for 4 we were threatening to make a dogs dinner out of it but Srodders and myself consolidated and once I got out the Slaughterman came in to swat a few to the boundary to ensure there were no further alarms. He finished unbeaten on 29 with Srodders also still there at the end on 27.

A first ever win for the 5s then and Im sure there will be more to come before the season is out. Well done to the Preston Brearley who himself had a TFC this week but has done a great job getting the 5th team going. Player of the match this week to Srodders for his impressive knock. Schlong de la jour goes to the Badger. He asked if we had bowled them out after Richard had had his end of innings huddle and we were walking off the pitch!
