Highgate 6 v Actonians Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 24 Jul 2021 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 8 Wickets

Match report This week the 5s found themselves back in North London at the Old Camdenians ground in Mill Hill to play Highgate. A very nice to play cricket although the straight boundaries are on the short side. Thankfully the 5s had full compliment this week with young Chris Moon making his senior bow. I was a bit concerned when he told me Rohit was his coach but when I mentioned the walking block it was evident this was an alien concept to him!

Highgate won the toss and opted to bat first. Was probably due to the fact they were still waiting for 3 players to arrive but the Preston Brearley was happy enough. The new ball was shared by Sam Jarman and Kabir who were opposed by an opening partnership who could easily have been grandad and grandson! The “experienced” opener to be fair struck the ball very well but early on had a tendency to find a fielder. Sam was getting some handy away movement but cleared up the youngster with one that nipped back. He then gave their number 3 a torrid time saving most of his best deliveries for him. Eventually he got one to lift off a decent length and the batsman (old school terminology I know!) could only glove one through to me. This brought in the number 4 who was making his debut for them. Ball one was despatched to the fence and it was clear we needed to send him back ASAP! Piri came on for a short spell but got both batsmen out when they looked like a decent score was in the offing. Ali held on to one at cover and the opener got a very healthy nick to give me a second victim. At 110 for 4 they were still in decent shape. However the Preston Murali was now on to weave his brand of mystery “spin”. He continued his rich vein of form taking 3 wickets including a well judged caught and bowled running back. He was well supported by the Dobber in Chief, Smithy, and Malik in the slips who took two catches as Highgate somewhat lost their way to be all out for 131 in 32 overs.

With the skipper not relaying the lack of tea message I was grateful to Bobby for a Nature Valley Granola bar to sustain me. If there was any justice Bobby would open the innings and go biggish? Well the first ball was a leg side long hop he didn’t make contact with. The second a long hop outside off stump he creamed the pants off. Unfortunately he hit it straight to point who took a decent catch. This brought in Mohsen to partner new boy Chris and they did a great job getting us back on track. Chris in particular took advantage of anything loose finding the boundary on both sides of the wicket. The put on 72 for the 2nd wicket before Mohsen was cleaned up. Chris got the same treatment by the same bowler on 47 but it was a called a no ball by umpire Thistlethwaite who noticed the bowler had knocked over the bails at his end. After that the game quickly went away from Highgate as Chris and Piri scored the required runs in no time and the job was completed in the 21st over. That’s 3 wins out of 4 for the 5s in division 6!

Man of the match a straightforward one this week with Chris Moon’s 70 the stand out performance. Schlong de la Jour has to go to Richard for not mentioning lack of teas. Yes perhaps we should have asked but he’s taking wickets and quite frankly I’m sure he doesn’t care as long as we get the W! Back to Winchmore Hill next week for the inform 5s who have moved up to the dizzying heights of 6th. Mid table obscurity beckons surely?
