Actonians Cricket Club 5th XI v Winchmore Hill 6 on Sat 04 Sep 2021 at 12.00noon
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 44 runs

Match report The 5s finished off their first ever league campaign against a team we beat in the corresponding fixture to earn our maiden victory. The prize for the winners of this game was 6th place in the bottom league of the Middlesex County Cricket League. Does it get any bigger than that? Well perhaps that is a slight exaggeration but we had a decent team full of experience. In fact with Cliff, Malik, Maben Senior and myself playing there was a hint of Last of the Summer Wine about it with Cliff definitely Compo!

Winchmore’s captain won the toss and decided to put us in on what was a very dry pitch with various indentations. The Preston Brearley sent out Maben and Rocket Ronit to face the new ball and unfortunately Andrew’s stay at the crease, on what was his 5th team debut, was relatively short lived. Well it lasted one ball as he guided one to second slip who took a smart catch. Mohsen came and went but Malik and Ronit did a great rebuild finding the boundary with regularity. Both got out in quick succession but not before they had put on over 70 for the 3rd wicket. Malik was out for his second jug avoiding 48 of the season while Ronit experienced the delights of a decent score for the 1st time this season with a well made 32. With Srodders falling cheaply our innings threatened to implode but thankfully Roheet had dropped a very handy middle order batsman, in the form of myself, and I found an ally in Charlie Soden. The Hill had two spinners on at the time who were both getting good turn and making Gunnersbury look like Ahmedabad! Seizing on the odd bad ball we got the scoreboard ticking over again and despite the lack of wag from the tail, we posted a very defendable 164.

The King of COVID, Kabir, took the new ball with Charlie and they were up against their openers who came out with a lot of intent. A combination of well struck shots and one or two streaky ones meant they got off to a bit of a flier. However with the score on 34 in the 8th over Charlie bowled one of them with one that did keep appreciably low. Kabir soon cleaned up the other opener with a peach of a ball that pitched on middle and hit top of off and another grubber took care of the number 4. Their skipper steadied the ship and at 74 for 3 they were well in the game. By the now the “spin” twins were in tandem. There was Cliff using flight, guile and experience and the Preston Murali using……..well one of his arms to bowl the ball! It was Pilo who did the damage with a second successive fiver for for the fives (try saying that quickly). They were soon 91 for 9 but then rather annoyingly for us, their last pair decided to play sensibly! Cliff and Dilly kept it tight however and eventually Kabir applied the coup de grace with the score on 122.

So finally a win for the 5s at “Fortress Gunnersbury” and 5 wins from the 13 that were played represents a very respectable return. Man of the match shared by Cliff and Malik whose contributions were equally valuable. Schlong de la Jour to Roheet for dropping me! Did his dad pick the team this week?

Big thanks to Richard and Smithy for getting the 5s up and running providing a great environment for players, both young and very old, to enjoy their cricket. Hopefully the club will be able to ensure the Gunnersbury pitches are better and safer next season. See you next season.
