North London Ladies v Actonians Cricket Club Womens 1st XI on Sun 06 Jun 2021 at 2pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
An exciting week for the ladies club as for the first time in our history, we were able to field two almost entirely different teams, with a total of 19 players getting involved!
After a brilliantly sunny Saturday, the sun decided to hide for most of Sunday, probably also struggling with the pressure of finals day. With a lot of the team being avid Brentford supporters, perhaps we should have known that it would probably take more than two attempts for us to lift a trophy...
Similarly to last year, captain Katie won the toss and elected to put us in to bat. Our initial pitch inspection showed some early roughness that we thought our bowlers could utilise in the second innings. Unfortunately, the North London bowlers were also very capable of using the pitch, and bowled very tightly, restricting our batters effectively with their consistent bowling. Our skippers plan of not losing any wickets in the first three overs went well, but she took it a step further and decided to not get any runs either, leaving us 1-0 off of the first 3 overs.
In a turn of events that no one could predict, Katie stepped across her own stumps and was given out LBW. Next into our batting attack was Eva, who sured up the innings, creating a partnership with Maz and helping to give us something to work with, before chipping it into the covers and testing the oppositions catching abilities. In came Aoife, our Irish international, ready to stop a collapse. Unfortunately she wasn’t able to stop Maz from running herself out for a respectable 26. Sarah, constantly inspired by the heroics of her peers, decided to do a speedrun of an innings, combining the work of her skipper and Mazza, running herself out for a duck in just 3 deliveries. A couple of late boundaries from Charlie and Momina managed to carry us up to 85, which we knew we would have to bowl and field very well to defend.
Sarah decided that defending 85 would be too easy, and decided to give them a little head start in the first over by dropping a couple straight into the slot. Despite this, the skipper decided to back her bowler, and was rewarded the next over as Sarah took out one of the openers with a beautiful off-cutter. Not long after, Maz showed that age is just a number with a great run out to remove their number 3. Aishah took her second caught and bowled in two weeks to get the wicket of the second opener, and was unlucky to not get more, with a drop low at square leg from our tallest player, a potential snick through that was well taken by Charlie at the stumps but not given, and a second possible c&b which sailed just out of her arms reach. Tight bowling from our younger players Gio and Riya helped to restrict the total through the middle overs, and there were some great examples of fielding, with some dives from Eva and Aoife. Katie and our senior player Maz were outstanding in the field, showing the real meaning of putting your body on the line. Sarah also managed to remember that a long barrier and a lunge are not the same thing, which is a miracle that should always be celebrated.
Despite this, the low total seemed to always be within North London’s grasp, and they managed to reach it with a couple of overs to spare. A special mention should be made for Eva who almost made man of the match with her 30 runs and impressive bowling where she only gave away 10 runs in her 4 overs. Our team showed really great spirit and remained positive without, so despite the loss, there are lots of positives we can take from today! Congratulations everyone :)
