Match report

U14 v Eastcote 21 July 2021

On the 21st we gathered at Actonians to play Eastcote. This game was played in the downslope of the mid-July heatwave and was probably the first occasion on which the girls team have played this opposition.

It turned out to be both an enjoyable and nerve-racking game, with an impressive bowling debut for under-10 Hannah Winter. For large chunks of the action Actonians were slightly behind the curve, and as the game moved into the last 5-6 overs Eastcote were looking strong favourites. However a late partnership of by Abbie and Leah saw us grab a dramatic victory with just three balls to spare, just as the sun sank below the tree-line on the north-west corner of the ground.

Eastcote batted first and set a quick tempo, scoring seven runs an over. Actonians conceded more wides than we would have liked, while the Eastcote skipper struck several boundaries : we weren’t helped here by a pre-match arrangement that Eastcote could play their under 15 skipper (Keighley) which we then forgot when setting the size of the playing area.

Still, Actonians were taking wickets at a regular rate, especially once Keighley had retired. Calla took three wickets and Maisie two, while Meghan and Leah took one each. The Eastcote captain returned after the last wicket had fallen, and with the score on 98 in the 14th over there was a real danger that Eastcote could take the game away from us. Hannah Winter, an under-10 player making her under-14 debut, stepped up to bowl. Conceding only 5 runs in 11 balls and bowling with impressive accuracy, she bowled Keighley with a straight one. Eastcote were all out for 104, a total which was impressive but which we felt was still within reach.

In reply Maisie, Meghan and Mia were all out reasonably quickly. However Calla was batting impressively, scoring five fours in her 28, and forged an important partnership with Marina. Had either of these two stayed in for much longer then we would have won fairly comfortably. Unfortunately they were bowled in quick succession, and Emma Weel was unfortunate to be run out shortly after. We were now on 75 for 6 with Abbie and Leah at the crease, while our last batter was Hannah who had never played a hardball game before.

Abbie/Leah were not fazed by the situation. They ran adventurously to keep us in touch and survived a couple of close run-out calls. As the tension grew the scorers and umpires needed an urgent discussion to clarify whether there were 2 or 3 overs to go : even the laws of maths were struggling to keep their composure. After some frantic counting the arithmetic reasserted control and, helped by a regular flow of wides and their sharp running, Abbie and Leah were able to bring us home to victory in the final over with 3 balls to spare.

It was a great game played in a fine spirit. Well done to both teams.

Player of the match : Calla for 28 and 3 wickets
Mentions to Abbie and Leah for rescuing the game in the last five overs, and to Hannah for getting her first under 14 wicket.
Thanks to Simon Frost for scoring on paper, and to Kate Wilson for taking charge of the scoreboard.
