Match report Actonians Girls U13 vs Stanmore - Sunday 29th May 2022
Match Report From the Boundary by Anna and Alex Ebdon

The drive through North London brought us to Stanmore and a lovely cricket ground nestled amongst woods, with the day set to be bright and sunny. As the travelling support set up their chairs along the third man boundary to escape a surprisingly chilly morning breeze, the two teams took the toss and play commenced. Actonians to bat first - Sienna and Freja Davis-Baker to open.

A tricky start to the innings ensued, with a little miscommunication leading to Freja Davis-Baker being run out in the first over. A piece of bad luck and easily done early on. This brought Emma to the crease and between her and Sienna the runs started to flow. Emma put on an excellent display of hitting all around the wicket, with Sienna batting herself in well before starting to open up her own scoring flow. Emma’s stylish innings was eventually brought to an end from an excellent, straight delivery, bringing Freya Cornish in at four.

The Actonians batters continued to accumulate runs very well, when the bowling allowed for ball-striking. Freya Cornish showed good poise, adding a couple before being bowled out. Valeria showed great confidence at the crease and in her running, and Sienna compiled an innings of great maturity, anchoring the entire batting effort - the perfect role to play at opener. Unfortunately Sienna’s innings ended with just two deliveries to go, as she fell to a straight one. Enter Molly with the unenviable task of facing just a couple of deliveries. But a nice hit and excellent bit of running between her and Valeria on the final ball added one more to the total. Actonians 132 for 4.

The bowling effort for Actonians started in fine fashion with the opening attack causing problems for the Stanmore opening batters. Abbie was once again fearless in her work behind the wicket and her confidence in staying close was rewarded when her fine work with the gloves brought about a run out from Emma’s second delivery. More excellent fielding brought about another run out from Valeria’s bowling. Actonians already on top.

One of the keys to any good innings in the field is maintaining pressure through bowling changes, and Actonians did this in fine fashion. Sienna, Emma and Valeria once again all bowled with accuracy, fire and threat. Molly bowled with great control, pinning the batters down and frustrating scoring. And to prove the point that pressure counts, her tight bowling led to a rash pull attempt from the Stanmore batter, with Emma taking a very smart catch at square leg. Wickets were continuing to fall with regularity.

Then the attack moved to Freja and Freya. Again, they bowled with fantastic accuracy and the Stanmore side continued to find it impossible to score freely. Freja Davis Baker bowled with fantastic pace and threat, resulting in a wicket taken lbw. Very nice bowling and a good all-team appeal to convince the umpire. Even some of the visiting crowd went up for that one!

Caitlin and Eleanora both had good bowling spells also, maintaining the pressure on the Stanmore side. Freya Corninsh lured a Stanmore batter into an attempt at a cut through the covers, only to find the ball very smartly caught by Sienna - a really good take.

A few thick edges had the ball running down to third man for runs, but Abbie spotted the risk and repositioned her field to stem the flow. Indeed, Abbie’s captaincy was excellent in this game, not only evidenced by all bowling changes working well, but in particular from how she applied pressure to the Stanmore lower order by bringing the field in closer.

Fielding was good all round from the Actonians side, with only one moment where the wheels threatened to come off. As the Stanmore side went for a risky run, enthusiasm for a run-out got the better of the Actonians girls and repeated aiming at the stumps led to overthrows and more runs. At last a loud, controlling shout of ‘STOP THROWING THE BALL!!’ came from the field and order was restored.

As the innings entered its latter phase, pressure built and this pressure paid off as the Stanmore side became more reckless in their game to try to gain momentum. A wicket clean bowled by Sienna and two more run-outs ensued, including a great piece of fielding from Valeria. The finishing bowling pair of Emma and Sienna were able to choke any attempt at a late batting flourish, completing an excellent performance in the field all round. Stanmore finished the 20 overs at 97 for 8, giving Actonians the win.

All in all, an impressive full-team performance from Actonians and a highly enjoyable morning of cricket for the visiting support.
