Match report Actonians Girls U13 vs Ealing - The view from the boundary

Lancashire vs Yorkshire. Arsenal vs Spurs. Roma vs Lazio. There's something about a local rivalry that adds some extra spice to a fixture. And so it was that the team travelled up to Corfton Road to take on Ealing Cricket Club, with the prospect of local bragging rights up for grabs.

Injuries meant that Actonians were down to a team of just 10, taking on a team known to have some quality in their ranks. Actonians in to bat first. Let's go.

The Ealing opening bowling pair really did show their quality, with some quick and accurate bowling right from the off. Alice was bowled early on by a great delivery, and Freja took a blow but soldiered on regardless. This wasn't going to be an easy place to bat.

Or was it? Step forward Emma 'the baby Bairstow' Weel. In the third over alone she hit four 4s with a sweet on drive, one through midwicket and two cover drives. Sumptuous stuff! It was to be the style of her innings - boundaries everywhere.

But the Ealing bowling continued to be sharp, with Freja being bowled and Sienna, after a solid start, being given lbw. Up to the crease stepped Hannah, who got off the mark with some nice running, survived being bowled (a clear no ball) and was driving the ball nicely.

In the eighth over Emma's swashbuckling innings came to an end with a very good caught and bowled, it has to be said. Which brought Abbie to the crease and so a batting partnership of sisters. We were all in a 'Winter wonderland' (pun credit - K. Bal). Abbie showed lovely form with the bat in defence and started to score with some nice shots, including a great one-bounce four.

Things steadied in the middle overs, with Hannah's wicket (bowled by a straight one) bringing Molly to the crease. Molly's form was also great, with a straight bat and confident rhythm. Bar a slightly kamikaze extra run attempt on an overthrow, things were solid. But runs were being found a little hard to come by.

When the opening bowling pair came back on, the game started to advance again. Abbie was slightly unlucky to be caught in the deep from a nice shot - just happened to pick out the fielder. More wickets fell as the accuracy of the Ealing bowling took its toll. At the end, Emily and Daisy were still standing, Actonians posting 105 from their 20 overs. A defendable total but the bowling would need to be good.

Alice opened the Actonians' attack with some accurate deliveries and plenty of flight, tempting Ealing into full-blooded shots. After an early dropped catch, the approach was rewarded with Molly taking a great catch at cover. Credit to Miss Ashby who said that Molly's safe hands should be positioned in that spot!

Overall the Actonians bowling was decent, with good lines being bowled and good pace. It was noticeable that Ealing were able to take quite a lot of quick singles and a few run out chances felt like they went begging. Come the 7th over, following a nice stop at third man from Daisy, Hannah took another wicket - cleaning up off stump.

The presence of a good left-handed batter for Ealing made things tricky as our bowlers struggled to adjust their line and were repeatedly clipped off her legs for runs. Indeed, runs were mounting and we badly needed wickets to stem the flow and change the game.

Alas, despite the best efforts of the team, these wickets didn't come and the quality of the Ealing top order meant they were able to reach the required total with a few overs to spare.

A good game - competitive and played in a good spirit. There were some sad faces in the away area at the end, and a loss is never easy to take.
But the only true loss in any game is if you take nothing from it to make you better next time, and there were a number of development points to take from this match, beyond the positives seen in good Actonians batting and bowling.

We could have been a little more urgent in the field and run outs would have been a definite possibility. The field felt a touch static and all players must take it upon themselves to respond to the way the game is going. Abbie did a good job of telling fielders to come in at certain times, but it's not just the captain's job - it's up to each individual to position themselves in the right place when they see what's happening. Game awareness is vital. If the ball's getting clipped past you a lot, set your starting position further out towards the rope. If they're stealing singles (and Ealing did), step in a bit and get ready to run in on the ball. In terms of bowling, it might be worth some more practice bowling around the wicket for some - in case a useful left handed batter comes along again.

Overall, a good performance from the team once again. A couple more wickets and it could have been a lot closer. We'll get them next time.
