Match report Actonians Girls U13 vs Ealing – 9th August
The view from the boundary by Al Ebdon

On another sunny evening in Ealing we all drove the extra 200 metres to Popesfield for the game against Ealing CC. Experience had taught us this would be a tricky fixture. Coin toss done, Actonians to bat first.
Valeria and Molly strode out to the middle of a hard pitch and brown-looking outfield (unsurprising given the recent weather). It was the start of an enterprising opening partnership that would last until the 9th over. Lots of good calling and running between the pair, some great shots from Valeria and steady support with the bat from Molly. It was noticeable from the start that the Ealing fielding was pretty good, which would continue through the innings, so runs were a little hard to come by. But solid stuff nevertheless.

Come the 9th, Molly finally fell to a straight one and this brought Emma to the crease. Some lovely shots followed and the run rate looked to be likely to accelerate. However, Emma was to fall to one of the most unfortunate ways to get out – run out at the non-strikers end when a great straight drive from Valeria touched the bowler and went on to hit the stumps. Really unlucky, but them’s the rules!
Sienna came in to partner Valeria and some solid hitting continued. But Ealing were bowling well and weren’t giving away many extras at all at this point. Despite some good running the runs continued to be hard-earned.

By the end of the 20th Actonians had amassed 114 for 2. A decent, defendable score. But it would need a very disciplined fielding and bowling performance to make it a winning total.
Special mention to Valeria for her batting performance in carrying her bat right through from the first delivery to the last.

So to the field, with Valeria opening the bowling also. And immediately there was a breakthrough – an absolutely suicidal attempt at an extra run on a slight overthrow meant Molly could destroy the stumps with ball in glove with the batter well out of her ground. Jos Buttler would have been proud of that stump mullering! A nice start.

Emma bowled with great fire once again. Ealing batted pretty well and were taking some good, quick runs. Actonians’ fielding was good in parts (Eydie throwing herself into the tough role of point fielder to great effect) but a bit slack in others, with some unnecessary boundaries coming owing to fielding mishaps.

Caitlin, Alice and Ellie all bowled well, with Alice taking the next wicket on the first ball of her second over – clean bowled. And it was catching (no pun intended), as Ellie then took a wicket on the first delivery of the next over!

Sienna came in to bowl despite carrying an injury and showed good pace. Alice took a lovely catch behind the wicket to remove another Ealing batter. Eydie bowled a beautifully tight over conceding just one run and somehow failed to get a wicket when the ball hit the top of the stumps but the bails remained in place! Unbelievable! Perhaps it just wasn’t going to be Actonians’ day.

Unfortunately, so it was to prove. Molly came in to bowl and delivered a good line, but runs had been steadily amassing for Ealing and in the 16th over they won the game with a four.

Overall, a good performance from Actonians, with some old foes leading to the eventual outcome – particularly extras and not being tight and switched on enough in the field. More hitting through the line with greater control instead of slashing at the ball with the bat could also have led to more scoring opportunities being taken. And we’d love to see some more foot movement when at the crease. All areas to continue to practice going forward.

But well done to the team. You all gave it a good shot and supported each other well. A little more control in the game next time and things could well go in our favour.
