Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Perivale Phoenicians IV on Sat 21 May 2022 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Fresh from our thumping win over Brentham last week we found ourselves back at Boddingtons against Perivale Phoenicians. A team against whom we have done well against in the recent past. There were a few changes this week with 2 Metre Charlie making his season debut and Sujan making his 4th XI bow. Oppo thought the pitch looked dangerous so decided to stick us in.
The old firm of 2 Metre and Maben opened the batting and had to show patience against some decent new ball bowling. Charlie eventually got those long levers going when he popped one over the railway line before his partner attempted and ambitious drive against the change bowler and was bowled. Lord Whear then came in and played some sumptuous cover drives as we built on the steady start. However Charlie somehow got caught at 3rd man with the score on 71 and we collapsed to 82 for 5 as myself, Rakesh and the Chairman and fell in quick succession. Luckily we had the grinder in chief, Corporal Jones, to come in and grind it out. Aided by Rocket Ronit at the other end they stemmed the bleeding and took the score to 117 when Ronit was out LBW to one that kept a bit low. Sujan then came in and hit a few lusty blows before both he and Jonesy succumbed to leave us 134 for 8. Raj and Mehaffy then frustrated Perivale with a mixture of watchful defence and the odd flourish. Raj fell with the score on 166 and the sight of Roheet coming to the wicket gave Mehaffy a positive mind set. A top edged six signalled his intent and it was a shame a mix up cost us the last wicket with 200 in sight. Still a score of 192 is certainly something to bowl at on this ground as we discovered against Twickenham the other week.
A Subway tea provided by Rakesh was much appreciated by both teams before we took to the field. The skipper took the new ball with Nathan and they managed to make early in roads. One of the openers got one that kept low from Roheet before Nathan struck twice to leave them 35 for 3. At this point their number 5 came in to join the other opener who was already looking in ominous form. As you can see from the scorecard we proceeded to then have a somewhat fruitless afternoon chasing leather. At times we didn’t bowl as consistently as we would have liked as Roheet tried all his options but ultimately these 2 were too good for us on the day. They were sensible enough to take the 1s and 2s with the field set back and hit the odd big shot. A number of the 3rd team had come down to watch and were surprised to see these 2 playing in their 4s having dismissed their 3s for 90. A quick look at their records show the opener solely played for their 2s last season and their number 5 has been a regular in 2s and 3s.
Not the start to the season we had wanted but playing against these good players just showed where we need to improve and we are certainly capable of that. Man of the match? Will have to go to Mehaffy for his 25 not out and 2 wickets. Schlong de la jour? Struggling this week on that front but has to go to Lord Whear for getting Covid! Hoping it’s a mild one old boy and we soon see that effortless run up and bowling action!
