Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Ealing Trailfinders III on Sat 04 Jun 2022 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Fresh from our dramatic tie against joint league leaders West Harrow last week, the 4s faced up to outright leaders, Ealing Trailfinders on Saturday. The usual plethora of changes but the 4s still looked reasonably strong for this one. On arrival Boddington looked a bit damp but the covers had done their job and play was able to start on time. Roheet won the toss and invited Ealing to have first dig.
The skipper opened up with a tight over but Raj decided to test out the middle of the pitch in the next and their openers took full toll. Raj settled down into his work however and struck first when one of their openers quite literally gave a gift of a catch to birthday boy Maben at mid wicket. However at 42 for 1 they were still in decent shape but, like us last week, Ealing lost 3 wickets for no runs to place us well and truly in the ascendancy. Their innings never really recovered after that with the only real resistance offered by their number 8 who did manage to stick around for a while. The Chairman only needed to bowl 10 overs this week so with any luck he will be able to get out of bed without assistance by about Thursday! Like the skipper he picked up 3 with Badger snaffling a caught and bowled with Ben Bell dishing up his brand of floaty leg spin to take two late on. Overall a good bowling and fielding performance with few blemishes. We were certainly helped by having the presence of youth in the form of Charlie Soden and Ben Moerdyk.
After a Billy buffet for tea, Billy went out to the middle with Andrew hoping for a different sort of buffet. However Trailfinders are top for a reason and clearly buffet bowling is not their specialty. The opening bowlers kept it tight but our openers were both watchful. At one point one of their fielders, who got a 2nd ball duck, pointed out to Billy he hadn’t scored a run for a while. Billy politely reminded him that at least he had a managed a few! When the score reached 18 Andrew got one that bounced on him and he gloved a catch to slip. This was brought in another 50 plus left hander the form of Lord Whear and he and Billy quickly got the scoreboard moving to take the wind out of their sails. Trailfinders were not shy in appealing but it would appear that a number of them must have bunked school when their geometry classes were taking place! Their 13 year old did put a fielder back at deep mid wicket and tried to bounce Billy out. Result? 4 runs and the lad picked up a back injury that forced him off the field. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Anyway Billy and Dave put on 70 for the 2nd wicket before the latter was adjudged to be run out by “Trigger Finger” Gupta. The skipper then became their substitute fielder and caught out Ben. Luckily Ben hardly mentioned it when he got out……or at the club………or at church on Sunday……..or at work on Monday………or at training on Tuesday etc etc. Just refuses to talk about it!
4th XI debutant Lewis ensure we reached the total without any more alarms with Billy finishing unbeaten on 59. Well played Billy although a highlight for me was a one short call by Umpire Gupta when he ran the most leisurely of twos to the longest boundary! Man of the match to you though. As for Schlong de la Jour? Got to go to Raj for leaving the keys in the changing room which lead to us being locked out of the clubhouse!
As disappointing as last week’s result was, we have played the top two teams and come through unbeaten. The 4s can still haul themselves further up the table if we maintain this level of performance. Im away next week due to my nuptials so not sure who will do the match report. Candidates? Badger? Nerdy Raj? Rohit the accountant? Stay tuned to this channel!
