Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v MTSSC IV on Sat 02 Jul 2022 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
After last week’s disappointing draw at Harrow St Mary’s the 4s completed their first half of the season with a home game against bottom of the table Titans. Before the game began Smithy and Flat Pack Billy used their experience by offering to fetch the team made by Chloe. Much to their “disappointment “ they missed most of the warm up in particular the running bit. Ah well lads there is always next week! The oppo won the toss and after some deliberation decided to bat first.
Antonia opened the bowling and struck in the first over when their opener heaved across the line and was cleaned up by the customary in swinger. Roheet was steady enough at the other end with the odd ooh and the occasional aagh but it was Antonia who continued to work her way through their top order. In fact she struck 4 times to leave the Titans 60 for 4 but their number 5 looked useful and started to find some support from the lower order. Andrew G bowled at a decent lick and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket or two as edges were either not held or found their way through the slip cordon. Smithy, fresh from his 8 wicket haul for the 5s last week, dobbed up the hill and bowled a ten over spell for just over 20 picking up one wicket. Rocket Ronit bowled his brand of of spin and started off ok and took a decent caught and bowled. However the wheels did somewhat free themselves and a series of pies soon followed! Lord Whear replaced him and picked up the key wicket of their number 5 who struck a fierce drive back to him. Diving full length to his right he took a fine catch two handed. A great effort from a man of 54 years and 364 days old!! The Titans looked like they were going to bat the full 50 overs but a late flurry of wickets, including Antonia’s fifth, ensure we would get 46 overs to chase down the 163 target. A decent bowling effort overall backed up by some good fielding on what was a difficult Bodders outfield.
After tucking into a fine Chloe tea (although quite what their 3 supporters were doing helping themselves before we had a chance to take any food) we sent out the in form Flat Pack and MS Jonesy to set the platform. Unfortunately Billy fell early when his trusty fetch the rubbish from the off side and place it on the leg technique let him down and he nicked off. However Lord Whear came in steadied the ship with Jonesy as they took the score up to 50. The Chairman then fell to a decent running catch at a deepish mid on and Srodders played on to one that kept very low. To complete the less than holy trinity Jonesy was plum LBW and was duly sent on his way by umpire Sivanathan! So at 54 for 4 we were in a spot of bother but I was joined in the middle by Sujan or Suuuuuj as he became known in the bar later! A patient rebuild was the order of the day and our contrasting batting styles seemed to compliment each other perfectly. I was Joe Root to his Johnny Bairstow if you like. Slight exaggeration perhaps but with some good running between the wickets and the odd biff to the boundary (mainly by Sujan) we swung the game back into our favour. We got the score past 100 before I was bowled by a short of a length ball that just missed my ankles but Rocket Ronit came in and maintained the momentum. Sujan brought up his half century with a mighty six to the longest boundary but fell the next ball when attempting something similar. Antonia and then Andrew G helped Ronit see us home by 3 wickets with 4 overs to spare.
So a good win in the end over a Titans team who played better than their position in the table suggests. Still room for improvement of course but we have put ourselves in a decent position at the half way stage. Man of the match jointly to Antonia for her excellent five for and Suuuuj for his maiden club 50 that could not have been better timed. As for Schlong de la Jour, it’s a TBC. I have initiated a full enquiry into the disappearance of one of my boundaries in the score book. I only hit two but only one was recorded. Scandalous. The worst piece of bookkeeping since Al Capone failed to declare his income tax. Bring back the Geek and his play cricket app!
Finally one more bit of news to report. Whatever was growing in the guttering at Bodders has been removed which presumably means The Big Show is well stocked up again! Thanks to Chloe for doing the tea and Piri for umpiring and belated happy birthday to Lord Whear. Welcome to the 55 club old boy!
