Match report Old Actonians' third team performed a Houdini-like escape from the grimmest of positions against South Hampstead 4, their most immediate top-of-the-table rivals.
Put in on a park’s wicket at West Hendon Playing Fields that was barely fit for a league fixture, Old A’s collapsed to a comical 7 for 5 as length balls either shot through at ankle height or reared up to the throat.
Salvation came through number nine Paul Maddock who batted with a maturity belying his 16-years to top score with 28, the only batsmen to reach double-figures as Old A’s scraped together their lowest total of the season, 82 all out.
Facing up to an embarrassing defeat, Old A’s bowlers then put South Hampstead’s batters to the sword with a terrific display of controlled quick bowling, backed-up by keen fielding.
Four batsmen failed to score and only one batsmen hit double figures as South Hampstead fell three runs short in a nail-biting finale.
Shaun Qamar ended with 3-20 and Tom Gilmour 3-17 as Maddock (3-18) fittingly smashed the stumps to take the winning wicket as Old A’s bowled out the opposition for 79.
