Match report Actonians Girls U13 vs Bushy Park CC – 11th June 2023

A bit of an early start for a Sunday, but we were rewarded with morning sunshine and the very lovely vistas across Bushy Park Cricket Club. They were great hosts and the whole game was played in tremendous, friendly spirit.

Actonians batted first and so Hannah and Molly came out to the middle to get things started. Hannah showed some lovely strokeplay early on, including a great cut to 3rd man for four. But a promising start was cut short in the 3rd over, with Hannah succumbing to a straight one and Alice following next ball with a bit of an over-eager first shot across the line of the ball.

Time to steady things and Molly and Freja did just that for the next couple of overs until Freja was bowled by a loopy delivery, bringing Sienna to the crease. What followed was a lovely partnership between Molly and Sienna, with Molly playing the steady, anchor role with excellent form and timing to gain a steady run rate. Sienna was in sparkling form, hitting it with great power all around the ground. Both girls played themselves in well and by the 14th over hit their 50 partnership! Celebrated by Molly carving a four through point.

All good things come to an end though, and in the 17th over an ill-advised quick run attempt on a wide led to Sienna being run out. Never mind, it had been a lovely innings and a great partnership to watch.

Caitlin came in next and after a few dot balls clipped a great four through gully. Showing quite a lot of stumps in order to access the ball can be a good, aggressive tactic, however it led to Caitlin’s wicket in the 18th over – clean bowled.

Molly didn’t quite manage to bat through the innings, being caught and bowled in the 19th when her feet didn’t quite get to the ball enough and she lobbed it back to the bowler. A great, solid innings though – exactly what the team needed from the top.

We thought we’d finally see the Actonians team bat through their 20 overs but it wasn’t quite to be. On a quest to take quick runs at the death, Sia was run out to leave Alessa not out as the final batter and Actonians finished on 110 all out. A decent total, and a far more solid batting performance than in some previous games. Good stuff.

So to the field and defending the total.

Hannah opened up the bowling and had the ball spitting off a length like a cobra! Her energy was rewarded in her second over as she gained a wicket, clean bowled. Freja supported from the other end, getting into her bowling groove. But it was evident that the Bushy Park girls had some quality batting in their line-up and runs were flowing.

Caitlin, Molly, Sienna and Alice all added great effort with the ball. A few potential catches went begging and runs continued to build. As drinks were taken after the 10th over of the innings, things looked a little bleak. Could they get back into it?

The very next ball it looked like they could! Sienna, bowling with great line and pace, led the batter to sky one above her own head, which Molly duly snaffled safely into the wicketkeeping gloves.
But it was just a little too late and Bushy Park had good batters who could pick their shots to gain runs. By the 14th over it was all over, Bushy Park taking the win.

A really good game to watch, played in tremendous spirit. Actonians needed a bit more control in the field and with the ball. But it was very hot and no-one says it was easy out there! Definitely a performance that builds on those previously and hopefully can provide some additional impetus for the next game on Tuesday at home against Shepherd’s Bush.
