Actonians Cricket Club Under 13's Girls v Shepherds Bush on Tue 13 Jun 2023 at 6.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Actonians Girls U13 vs Shepherd’s Bush CC – 13th June 2023
The view from the boundary by Alex Ebdon
Another very hot day for cricket, and as 6pm came around the sun was still very much shining on the Actonians ground for the match against Shepherd’s Bush. Given the recent game away against this opposition had been a pretty close affair, here was a chance for revenge (in a very sporting manner!). Plus, given the improvements shown in the last game against Bushy Park, hope was springing eternal in the summer sun.
Actonians fielded first, which felt like a definite plus. A chance to work through the oppo’s lineup with the undoubted firepower that the team possesses with the ball!
Valeria was back in the team and opened up the attack. And perhaps the attacking was a little too fierce initially, as she struggled to find her radar a little and some extras leaked through given the sheer heat of the deliveries. Molly took the ball from the other end, and following a slightly rocky start got her line in order.
But come the third over everything fell in to place. It was the kind of over you put on your showreel. Valeria smashed the wicket with her first delivery, kept up the pressure and then took another two wickets, clean bowled later in the over. A hat-trick was on, but not quite this time. A fabulous over though, that really opened things up for the team.
Hannah and Freja took over bowling duties next, with Hannah showing her usual fire and bowling a great length, and Frieja bowling with fantastic control to choke any flow of runs. Fielding from the team was good also, with Neha backing up well in the sweeper role behind Alice.
Neha took the ball and almost created a chance for a catch. Sienna came in and showed great pace – with some great keeping from Alice to keep the pressure on. Indeed, the Shepherd’s Bush girls were having a tough time laying the bat on the ball in any meaningful way. Testament to a good performance from the Actonians team as a whole.
In the 10th over Freja’s tight bowling was rewarded as the pressure paid off. Valeria scooped up the ball, fired in to Alice and a run out was taken! Things were looking good.
Alice took the ball for the 11th and found her line, with Eydie and Daisy fielding really well to keep things tight. Sienna had great line and length in the 12th and it felt as though another wicket was coming. Indeed, soon there was the sound of splintering willow once again, as the bails were sent to Wales! (actually, wrong direction – but never mind).
And things kept going. Sia took the ball for the 13th over and following two run-out chances her looping delivery bamboozled the batter to knock the bails off once again. Lovely stuff! Alice bowled with good fire and great length, as did Hannah again. Valeria took another wicket in the 16th (middle peg, naturally) and in the 18th it was all over for the batting side as Sia took a great run out with a direct hit. Fabulous!
All done at 93. A really great effort to keep things under 100. Had there been a little more control over extras at times that could have been a lot, lot less too!
Now to the batting, with a total that felt distinctly gettable.
Hannah and Molly opened up again, Hannah clipping square twice for four in the first over. Very nice batting. Running was good too, with some quick runs being taken.
In the second over Hannah’s desire to score got the better of her and she was bowled out having a bit of a swing at it. Which brought Sienna to the crease, and her big-hitting brand of batting was in evidence once again! The partnership between her and Molly grew well, both batters playing nicely. They were unlucky to have the partnership broken in the 6th over, as a ‘yes/no’ call led to a slip for Molly and she was run out trying to regain her ground.
Neha came in next and the classy batting continued. Sienna was seeing the ball really well and waiting for it to come into the perfect point for her to hit it. Timing matters and her timing was great. Runs were flowing nicely, with some big hits for four all around the ground.
Neha showed really lovely form in her batting and particularly great use of the feet to get to the right place to hit. Something that the rest of the team can definitely learn from.
In the 10th Sienna’s swashbuckling innings came to an end, taking one swing too many and being bowled out. Valeria came in next and after surviving an early scare (dropped in the field), brought her traditional brand of front foot batting to the party. Running between her and Neha was good and by the 12th over they were almost there. A four for Valeria brought he scores level and a very measured drop-and-run on the next delivery meant a first win of the season for Actonians!
All-in-all a great performance from the Actonians team, with the bat, ball and in the field. Well done team!
