Match report Actonians Girls U13 vs Sunbury CC – 2nd July 2023
The view from the boundary by Al Ebdon

We were set for a lovely morning as we arrived at Actonians for the girls to face the team from Sunbury. The first time we’d seen a full 11-a-side game this season and the bbq to follow. What’s not to like?
Actonians batted first and regular opening pair Alice and Molly strode out to the middle. Some good opening bowling from the Sunbury side led to Moly’s wicket from the last ball of the over. Can be a tough gig opening the innings!

Alice showed some lovely strokeplay right from the start, with a sweep for a single and a lovely cut through cover point for four. Sienna had joined her in the middle and hit a great drive through midwicket for four also. Things looked good until she took too big a swing and missed, leading to her wicket, clean bowled.

Valeria was next in to bat, clipping an edge for two. Alice’s innings came to an end shortly afterwards with another big swing and a miss. Daisy joined Valeria and showed immediate intent, with some good calls between her and Valeria (and some riskier ones!) leading to runs.

Valeria was seeing the ball very nicely and scoring runs all around the ground. The 8th over saw the fairly rare introduction of a spin bowler, which certainly lit Valeria’s scoring instincts. She was fortunate though when hitting her own wicket through the force of her swing that it had been a no-ball!

Daisy was also playing very nicely and the partnership was working well to keep the scoreboard ticking over. But all good things come to an end and so it was in the 11th over when Daisy was run out in a rather unfortunate way – a mistaken assumption that Valeria’s shot had gone for four led to Daisy being out of her ground when the return throw came in. Valeria immediately smashed one through mid on for four by way of revenge.

Eydie came in next and immediately got a nice drop and run to get Valeria back on strike. What followed was shot of the season so far, Valeria hooking wonderfully to send the ball over the rope for 6! Almost hitting the kids playing All Stars cricket at the far end of the ground! It was quite a hit.

Valeria stayed true to her Bazball roots and it led to her wicket in the 12th. One swing too many and she was bowled. Caitlin came in and showed some good defence early on, Eydie also steadying things with a good, straight bat. A good catch at point saw the end of Caitlin’s innings, Freja coming in and getting a good, quick run. What followed was a series of run outs with the girls’ running being a little on the adventurous side. But they made it through to the 20th over and posted a decent score of 116.

On to the defence of the target, with Valeria opening up the bowling with her trademark fire. Freja took the second over and showed really great control, helped by good fielding to keep scoring opportunities limited. And in Freja’s second over we had the first breakthrough – her great, straight bowling leading to the first wicket clean bowled.

Sienna and Neha were the change of bowling, with Alice and Daisy showing great fielding to stop runs. Neha’s looping action lured in the batter and Sienna took a great catch – second wicket down!
Caitlin and Alice took over bowling duties and both had good line and pace, again keeping scoring opportunities very limited. All this pressure built up and in the 11th over Actonians had their next wicket – bowled by Alice.

As Andrea took the ball in the 13th over the Sunbury team were having to be more expansive in their strokeplay as they were behind the game. And Andrea took advantage, bowling out the batter with a lovely delivery. Valeria joined the party from the other end, taking a wicket with her first ball and the team nearly took a wicket run out in the same over. Special mention at this point to Molly who was keeping very well, especially given the pace of some of the Actonians bowling.

In the 15th over Andrea was unlucky as a skyed shot dropped safe. But come the 16th over the wickets were tumbling again as Valeria took out middle peg with a beauty of a ball.
Alice and Sienna wrapped things up at the end with some solid bowling – a run out in the 17th over and Alice taking a wicket bowled in the 19th adding to the pressure on the Sunbury batters.
And the Actonians efforts with the ball and in the field were rewarded as the innings came to an end – Sunbury finishing on 91. Another Actonians win, and a very nicely crafted one at that.

Coach’s notes – Chris Tracey

One of the highlights of the game was Valeria’s 39 – her second highest score (she got 40 in a defeat to Ealing last year). Her six was the first I remember being scored by a player in the Actonians girls team.

The bowling performance was one of the most impressive I’ve seen by any of the girls teams in the last few years. Extras are still slightly higher than we’d like, but way down on some earlier games. We used 7 bowlers and none of them conceded more than 6 an over and five of them took at least one wicket. The way they stopped the talented openers from getting any momentum at the start helped us get the early breakthrough which made the win possible. But key to it was that everyone bowled well.

Batting – the run rate slowed after Valeria was out, but it was really important that the last five wickets gave us an extra 29 runs.
Fielding was really good – lots of lively encouragement and backing up without being asked.
Overall, one of the best performances I’ve seen from a girls team, and against very good opposition.
