Ickenham Ladies v Actonians Cricket Club Womens 1st XI on Sun 21 May 2023 at 1.00pm
Match was Tied Tied

Match report We turned up to Ickenham for our first 40 over game of the season with some optimism - hoping the humid overcast conditions would help our seam attack. Captain Katie went ahead and won the toss, giving our bowlers the go ahead. Openers Riya and Emma were tight but unfortunately the slow, low deck wasn't helping them and their opening pair raced to 94-0 at drinks, with a few big sixes and despite a mankad (which we retracted!) which almost caused controversy!

Gretchen recovered very well from an expensive first over, and Antonia's swing and variations kept the scoring down, but it was Emma's reintroduction which brought the first wickets - a beautiful yorker and a straightforward catch for Anty accounting for both the openers. Unfortunately Anty had been out of the spotlight too long and decided to make her skipper's life harder by bowling two high no balls, bringing spin on earlier than expected, though this was a blessing in disguise as Saoirse and Keely picked up the next 3 wickets, including an accidental catch from keeper Charlie who clung on despite looking the opposite direction!

Some excellent death bowling (and fielding!) kept Ickenham to just 173, which we knew we could chase. Shoutout to a brilliant display behind the stumps from Charlie and good fielding all round.

Our openers walked out confidently, knowing batting long was the order of the day, especially against good bowling. Saoirse was batting slowly, so the bowler decided to give her a gift which she repayed by hitting straight to square leg, but Katie was being more aggressive from the other end, pushing their field out early, though unfortunately got a good ball. Antonia and Keely stabilised, punishing the bad balls (Antonia hitting a big six!). When they were out our new signing Emma and keeper Charlie decided no more Actonians middle order collapses with a vital 50+ partnership - Charlie bringing her power game and Emma rapid between the wickets.

The required runrate was now climbing, and Charlie and Emily were both runout looking for quick runs, both sacrificing their wickets. This left us needing 13 off the last over. A series of 2s and a leg bye brought us to 8 off 3 with Riya facing her first ball. A swing and a miss and surely the game was done, but Riya had other ideas. The next ball she confidently slapped straight for 4, giving us a sliver of hope! 4 needed off the last ball, 3 to tie. Riya flicked it to the longest boundary - not enough for 4 but far enough for Emma and her to run through for 3 to bring up the most unlikely tie and sending the Actonians crowd wild! We saw it as a win, Ickenham clearly thought they'd thrown the game away.

Shout outs to Riya for her tight bowling and ice cool veins at the death (bowling and batting) and Charlie for her keeping and vital batting contribution but POM was Emma O'Connor for two vital wickets and a match-winning 46*. DoD went to Antonia for getting lost on the way to the ground and bowling too many no balls (not the first time at Ickenham!), beating out Gret's rush of blood mankad.
