Match Report – Richmond (U13) – 25th May by Chris Tracey

As we moved into back end of May the ‘never-ending greyness’ of 2023 came to an end, and we played a match in something approaching proper cricketing weather.
A lot of the seniors were at Lords which meant the terrace was slightly quieter than usual, but we had a full set of Actonians officials. Tracy was our scorer and Scott (the club captain) had kindly agreed to umpire.
As is usually the case in games between these clubs, the traffic played a role in the start. The standard hold-ups on the Kew bridge and western edge of the north circular meant we were good to go at just before 6.15. Thankfully the proximity to mid-summer and the recent turn in the weather meant we were just about able to complete the game before the light had gone at about 8.45, although it was a close run thing : pictures taken just before the end of the match showed the treeline on the western side of the ground obscuring the sun as it dipped towards the horizon.
Valeria was captain and worked assiduously on her bowling and batting line-ups before the game. Alice, Hannah and Eydie were there for the under 12s. Lara, Andrea, Shion and Lilymae were there from the under 11s, with the latter 2 making their debut at this level. We didn’t have a regular wicket-keeper so Alice was behind the stumps for most of the Richmond innings, with Valeria taking the role for the last few overs. Overall we had an inexperienced side, but this had also been the case when the under 15s played Richmond back in the ‘Grey Age’ on May 11th, so we had reason to be optimistic.

*** The Game ***
The optimism seemed justified at the end of the first over. Valeria opened the bowling and her first ball was a full toss dispatched for four, but the second was a swinging yorker which rattled the stumps : Richmond were 4 for 1 after two deliveries. At the start of the 3rd Valeria got another, also bowled. Richmond were 15 for 2 and Actonians were the first team to take the upper hand.
However Richmond teams usually have several talented and effective batters, and today was to prove no exception. Playing calmly and putting the ball into the gaps, the 3rd wicket partnership recovered quickly. They took the score past 50 in the 7th over and had reached 79 in the 11th. An excellent combination by Valeria and Alice broke the partnership with a runout, and Valeria took a 3rd wicket with the score on 94. By this point Actonians now had a chance of getting Richmond out for a manageable total.
If the game had a turning point it was probably came about now. Valeria bowled her final over which was quick and aggressive, with Scott reporting after that the ball was swinging about a foot either way. Watching from the Terrace it was difficult to believe that Valeria didn’t get another wicket, and had she done so we could have wrapped the innings up very quickly. However great credit is due to the Richmond batters who defended a little desperately but with great determination. They saw out the storm and managed to get another 36 runs off the final five overs to reach 140. What had looked like being a gettable, if challenging, run-chase for Actonians had now become a very difficult one.
Taken in the round the fielding/bowling was a curate’s egg : good and bad in parts. There was some very good stops and chasing but also quite a few avoidable misfields which cost us about 30 runs. Every bowler bowled several good deliveries but there were also quite a few wides and no-balls. We conceded 55 extras to Richmond’s 30, and the umpires commented on this as a significant difference after the game. There were a number of highlights – some excellent chasing for boundary shots, Alice putting in a very good shift behind the stumps, not having played there before. There was the excellent runout (already mentioned) and Andrea executed some excellent one-handed pick-ups and returns. All of the under 11s produced several good deliveries in their respective spells.
A target of 140 was always going to be tricky to chase down. Hannah scored a four off the second ball which was an encouraging start , but Valeria and Lara were bowled off the last two balls off the over. At 6 for 2 we were heading for a but of a thrashing, but the third wicket partnership by Alice and Hannah stopped the situation from worsening and then started to gather momentum. While there was quite a lot of swinging and missing, there was a payoff with these two batters bagging a total of nine boundaries between them. The score accelerated from 25 for 2 in the fifth over to 45 in the 7th and there was a sense on the Terrace that a win wasn’t beyond the bounds of possibility.
But the next 3 overs yielded 5 runs and Hannah was bowled and the game was over as a contest. Alice continued to dispatch the ball to the boundary and Andrea played the ball into gaps for a series of singles with a noticeable efficiency. Alice was eventually bowled for 34 when a first Actonian fifty had started to look a possibility, and our junior tail-enders battled gamely to try and get us past one hundred. Eydie was bowled and Shion runout. With the last ball of the innings Lily Mae drove to mid-on and was runout by a direct hit. Actonians were all out for 97 and had lost by 43 runs.

**** In the Final Analysis ****
The result was a fair reflection of the performances. Richmond weren’t enormously better, but they were much more consistent in applying the basics. They gave away fewer extras (30 against 55), and made fewer basic fielding mistakes; we probably conceded 30 runs through this sort of glitch, whereas Richmond’s only noticeable error was a missed chance for a catch. Richmond pushed runs into the gaps a little better than we did and it was this, as much as anything, which helped them to their score of 140. Interestingly we scored more boundaries (9 against their 7).
Still, there were lots of positives to takeaway. Valeria’s bowling was fearsome (in a good way). She got three wickets, and their best batter only just kept her out in her final over. Scott (umpire) said it would have been a very different game if she could have got that wicket. Every other bowler had several really good deliveries, with Lily Mae causing the batters to play and miss on several occasion. The fielding was quite good, albeit backing-up didn’t happen 100% of the time: there were several highlights in terms of good boundary stops. The runout by Valeria was the pick of the bunch and Andrea’s fielding was pretty sharp throughout.
Player of the Match – tricky one this. I’m going to go with Alice, for a doughty performance behind the stumps, getting a wicket for 7 runs, and then top-scoring with 34.
