Match report In recent weeks the weather has shown no inclination to accommodate itself to the imminent arrival of the summer sport, and there was no sign of this changing when the Actonians Girls kicked off their 2024 season with an away game at Harrow. The rain which had threatened the game for several days beforehand just about held off, but for the supervising officials it was strictly woolly hat and gloves weather.

The game was due to start at 6.00 in order to ensure we finished before sunset at 8.11pm. Getting there for the start time was a challenge as the Actonians convoy had to travel north-west at rush hour across several major barriers - the A40, several rail lines, the Grand Union Canal at the stone bridge just south of Horsenden Hill, and a traffic jam on the Horsenden/Sudbury border. It was therefore an impressive achievement for the whole team to have arrived by 5.45.

Abbie, our captain, won the toss and chose to bat, a decision reflecting a desire to avoid a run chase in the gloom as the light closed in after 7.30. This was a sensible decision, but it looked like rebounding on us when we were 8 runs for 4 wickets at the end of the 3rd over. Emma and Abbie were both run out by smart fielding as they looked for early singles, and Sienna was out to a smart catch at mid-wicket. Alice looked in good form with a four off the first delivery she faced, but was bowled shortly after. At this stage it looked like we would be heading home during the latter phase of the Wesh London rush hour and might, just, be back in time for Coronation Street.

But Andrea and Ava steadied the ship. Batting sensibly and running quickly they gradually rebuilt the innings with our first 50 partnership of the season. At one point it looked like they might carry their bats through to end of the 20 overs, but the partnership ended when Ava was run out for 15. Andrea was bowled shortly afterwards and when Lara was out LBW for 1 the innings came to an end. Shion was the not out batter (also for 1) and Actonians were all out for 71. This wasn’t a huge total, but we have some good bowlers so it was potentially a defendable one.

Actonians began the defence of their total well, with Alice and Sienna taking two quick wickets. Harrow were 13 for 2 and Actonians had a chance. Cricket matches often turn on one key event such as a a dropped catch or a brilliant run-out, but that wasn’t to be the case today. After the first couple of wickets, Harrow scored quickly and batted sensibly, and although Actonians kept their composure and bowled reasonably well, the game gradually slipped away. The winning runs came in the 8th over and Harrow had won by six wickets at approximately 7.45pm.


*** Analysis ***

It’s obviously disappointing to lose the first game of the season but, with the first training session being on the previous Friday, this is only the second time the players have assembled this season (I hesitate to say summer). There were plenty of positives to take away which we have discussed and will be learning from in training. It is also worth remembering that half of the team are under 12s and three-quarters are under 13 or below, so this counts as a creditable outcome.

*** And Finally ***

I think this might be the first time I have been involved in a competitive game at Harrow. The ground has a very nice ‘tucked away from the world’ feel to it, and also has one of the steepest slopes I have seen at a cricket pitch. Thanks to Harrow for being welcoming hosts and thank you to everyone for getting to the game and contributing.

A special thanks to Keely for umpiring and Kate for supervising the team. Having three officials is a big help to the club and team and also means, under new league rules, that we get a bonus point. As a result the adults have accumulated one more league point than the players, which hopefully will act as an incentive to the team in our forthcoming fixtures.

One last point worth mentioning. One of the Harrow officials told me that Harrow-on-the-Hill apparently has its own micro-climate. This is the sort of thing which I which I really do want to believe, but which I sense might not be true. If I have a spare few moments I will try and research this later in the summer.
