Indian Gymkhana v Actonians Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 12 Jun 2010 at 1.00pm

Match report
Another stellar performance by the Old A's, this time away from home on a strip far removed from a wicket you would play on in London. It felt like playing on a low barren track imported from the Indian sub-continent.
After winning the toss Old A's batted first yet again this season. Despite losing some early wickets as the batsman struggled to come to terms with the uneven bounce and lack of pace, one trooper stood out; Asif Qamar affectionaly known by his team mates as 'Huggy' (bear) took his time building the perfect innings on this type of pitch. He started watchfully and gradually established control of the innings with an accomplished 80. Along the way he was supported by the likes Raj, Daljeet, James and Arjuna who all reached double figures. Our last pair Howard and Paul finished the innings off nicely with an aggresive last wicket cameo that enabled us to declare at 199/9 in 54 overs.
Having given ourselves 46 overs to bowl out Indian Gymkhana we got off to a great start through James who grabbed a scalp in his first over. However the next two batters showed aggressive intent and tagged along at a fair clip. Anthony bowled well after taking a couple of overs to find his rhythm... a missed catch at second slip and very very good shout for LBW denied... were things not going to go our way for the first time this season? After a second close shout for LBW and a few flared tempers. We got together as a group and decided that it was time to switch gears and assert our stamp on the game, it paid dividends with Anthony striking twice and Howard on his debut in the 2s also striking twice. Paul on the other end was his usual reliable self picking up one himself thanks to a wonderful piece of catching by Anthony running back from short backward square leg. With our opposition reeling at 6 for 133. Our man for tailor made for this wicket Daljeet was brought on and he duly obliged with 3 scalps, one of them a very tidy catch by Howard diving to his left... with victory within our grasp but with precious few overs left to bowl James and our second debutant Saf were brought on to bowl. Saf almost sealed the coffin with a beauty that swung away catching the edge of the batsman's blade but Arjuna's outstretched right glove behind the stumps could not cling on to the difficult chance and the rebound fell agonisingly away from Anthony at second slip! Had we missed our golden opportunity to lock away 10 points???
James Carr our 'closer' was fired up for the 44th over and his second ball trapped the batsman dead in front of the stumps about 4 inches off the ground behind the popping crease in front of middle and off... We all went up in unison appealing for our final wicket and the most unbelievable thing happened the umpire sticks his arm out and declares the delivery to be a no ball POST APPEAL! We were all numb and sickened with dis-belief as we were robbed of a certain win and 9 valuable points.
We gave it our all for the last two overs but Indian Gymkhana clung on to a draw. I was extremely proud of the effort put in by the boys, our fielding on the day was outstanding and I know this game will make us stronger for the rest of the season... cricket sure can arouse a lot of emotion and passion and this game certainly did.
