Match report
What a game and what a great result for Old A's!
Once again I came up trumps with the toss (one consistent part of me game!) and elected to get back to our trusted method of putting up a score on the board and defending it, like we had at the beginning of the season.
James E and Raj got us off to a steady start and just when they were looking comfortable James succumbed to a lazy shot and was adjudged LBW. Roman our senior statesman walked in at number three and togther with Raj set about getting on top of the bowling, once again when they seemed to have the bowling on a platter Roman had a momentary lapse of judegement and had the timber disturbed, 62/2. James Carr joined Raj who was looking solid and good for big score. James flirted with the few watching, showing us a glimpse of the devastation he can wreck with a bat in hand but like the two before him wasted a great start by hanging his bat out to an arm ball and was caught behind...yet another into double figures not carrying on the good work long enough. Asif and Raj rotated the strike nicely with 4s being hit for anything loose. Raj reached a deserved half century much to the delight of all us in the dressing room and Old As looked good for score well in excess of 200. However, Asif and Raj departed in quick succession to leave us 128/5 and when I played one shot too many across the line to be given LBW we had wasted our opportunities to be 146/6. Daljeet and Marcus consolidated and then accelarated nicely with a little help from Anth to get us to 203 by the end of the 52nd over, when I decided to call the troops in.
Despite us being perhaps 40-45 runs below par, we were confident of bowling Edmonton out for a much needed win. James E got us off to a blinder with three wickets in his first spell...He bowled with hostile pace and troubled the top order with his length. The two openers tickled two beauties right into me gleeful gloves and the third was spectacularly caught by Anth diving full length to his right, 'Michael Hussey like'!Meanwhile, Anth from the other end bowled as he usually does with a perfect seam position and got us a 4th wicket with a ball that swung in late to trap this dangerous leftie LBW. We could have had a 5th and a 2nd for Anth but 'Mr reliable' Carrie just could not cling on to a sharp chance at slip... this was just the beginning of the drama that was about to unfold.
The 5th wicket became a bit of a nusiance to us with Edmonton counter attacking through some streaky hitting by their Lankan Wicket Keeper. It was time to bring on the trusted troopers Mitson and Carr into the Attack...Edmonton were creeping towards our score and we desperately needed a wicket. Just when I thought our lads had momentarily forgotten to attack the stumps, Mitson delivered a peach to shatter the stumps of the Edmonton WK and he followed up with an even better dismissal with a change of pace to their in-form number 4... Mits runs in and decides to try a leggie for a slower ball; that floats head high towards the batter who ducks and then watches in disbelief as the ball drops like a well guided heat seeking (stump seeking) missile to hit the timber 2-3 inches from the top! We are ecstatic as this batter was a thorn in our side. Carrie chips in with one of his own from the other end well caught by Daljeet at cover to leave Edmonton 7 down 140. Mits chips in with a 3rd of his own and we have 8 for 145, sensing victory we move in for the kill but Edmonton have other ideas and go for a win themselves with a daring counter attack!
I change my bowlers, set in/out fields to save runs while trying to snatch the last two wickets but nothing seems to be going our way. Paul bowls good lengths and gets perilously close to grabbing a wicket twice, with the ball just evading fielders each time. James E is once again probing and fast in his second spell but has no luck in prising a wkt though and his added pace could expose us to some streaky runs on the short side of the field... decide to try Daljeet for two overs but still no bleedin breakthrough! ...now I'm sweating like a hog in heat and running out of ideas, quietly praying to the higher forces for a pinch of luck.
With 8 runs to defend, Roman standing at first slip asks me who is the most likely to get a wicket with an old ball... We both agree it is the 'Mail mon' (the one who always delivers :o))Carr we have to revert to, for one last bite at the cherry! Carrie with his third delivery back holds on to a wonderful return catch low in his follow through to grab number 9, we are all overjoyed and excited... with his next delivery he shatters the stumps of Edmonton's last man with luverly late bender! We all scream in joy and jump into a huddle like we have won the world cup! I almost feel like grabbing a stump and running a lap around the ground... but that can wait till we win the league!!!
Truly sprited team effort from each and every member of our team and this win will inspire us to greater deeds this season...its the second beginning of our season lads!
Ya proud skipper,
Arj
P.S. Special thank you to Ernie who umpired the entire game from both ends and had an excellent match with his decision making. After the game Edmonton were very appreciative of Ernie's efforts as well, saying it is so good having a honest chap controlling the game. Well done Ernie, we are lucky to have you and are certainly very grateful for your efforts each week.
