Actonians Cricket Club Club XI v University of West London on Sun 06 May 2012 at 1.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report 50s from Trent Conwell and Aaron Swan not enough to hold back UWL

The first Sunday game of Old A’s season ended in a hard fought defeat as Josh Jayakar’s University of West London team managed to push past Old A’s 188 with 3 wickets and 5 overs to spare.

Old A’s batted first with Aaron Swan and Alistair Slaughter opening up with a good partnership. Slaughter fell on 33 bringing in Trent Conwell for his first game on the Old A’s track. He pushed through the sticky wicket and caught up with Swan and they finished on 53 a piece.

Some free swinging of the bat from Asif Qamar, Nathan Mehaffy, Luke Harrington and Shaun Qamar followed and gave what seemed a challenging total for the visitors to chase, in the conditions.

Some tight bowling from Piradeepan Sivanathan and Conwell kept the UWL run rate down for the first 8 overs and saw two wickets fall. Bob Coutt’s dismissed opener Jayakar thanks to a sharp catch from Shaun Qamar, diving inches from the floor at square leg.

At the half way point, the score was exactly half of Old A’s and it looked like it was going to be a good run to the end, however after drinks, UWL started swinging more freely and found the gaps the home batsmen hadn’t been able to find in their innings. Asad Ali Hussain claimed another wicket, with Shaun Qamar holding onto a skyer at mid-off.

UWL lost a further wicket from a run out and Luke Harrington and Shaun Qamar contributed some sharp bowling spells, with Qamar and Piri taking a further wicket in their second spells, but it was not enough in the end. With 4 needed and 3 wickets remaining, UWL’s Sunny drove the second ball of the 35th over for the boundary and that was it.

Overall it was an enjoyable game and was played in good spirits by both teams. Look out for the return fixture later in the year!
