Match report
Match Report – Old As 2nd XI vs Osterley 2nd XI
After a brief delay for rain, the As took the field against Osterley, who were put into bat by Alistair Slaughter.
Osterley started as they always do with a few shots played against the openers Shaun Qamar and Piri Sivanathan until the latter removed opener W. Khan for 4 with a good catch taken by Aaron Swan off the bottom edge. The next wicket took a while to fall as the number 3, S Ahamad, played a strong 22 until Shaun Qamar had him clean bowled.
Anthony Carlos then got into the action, taking a sharp catch at slip, diving to his right, off the bowling of Piri, before removing the other opener, K Khan, then J Sokh. Asif Qamar took the first of his three catches to remove Sokh.
Osterley then enjoyed some stability as Rehman wasted little time knocking up an aggressive 79 until Asad Ali Hussain had him caught by Asif at long on. Asad then went on to take two more wickets, caught by the Qamar brothers and Piri had one more, clean bowled.
Piri finished with figures of 3 for 49 off 11 with two maidens. Asad took 3 for 70 off 8.3.
Osterley were bowled out in the 41st over and had set a seemingly gettable total of 216 on what appeared to be a fairly flat wicket.
When openers, Aaron Swan and Andy West took the field, all was optimistic in the As changing room. However, that was about to change.
The first over went by as a maiden, well watched by Andy but the 2nd over brought some bad luck as Aaron watched a wide go by before a missed timed pull off Rashid left him caught at square leg for a quacker. Andy was then removed in the second over for another duck, caught off guard by a yorker from Ahamad. Arjuna Upasena followed two balls later, caught behind off a riser.
Asif Qamar was the next in and enjoyed a frustrating looking nine before he was also caught behind in the 5th over, also off Ahamad. Rob Long then went for a duck the next ball. This brought under pressure skipper, Ali Slaughter, to the crease, with the tweets demanding a captains innings.
Slaughter started shakily in the first over, however he got into his stride in the second, dispatching Rashid for 12 first over, and 15 in the second. Unfortunately, he was also part of a disastrous run out which left Tom Byrne just short of his ground. Both batsmen agree the wind was to blame in the failure in communication.
Slaughter was joined by vice-captain, Anthony Carlos, and the two enjoyed a brief but productive partnership with 20 runs coming from three overs, Carlos taking 12 from three fours. Carlos was also a victim to Ahamad’s accurate yorker, bringing Shaun Qamar back to the crease.
The partnership between Slaughter and Qamar lasted a bit longer: seven overs for 36 runs with Qamar batting very sensibly alongside Slaughter. Slaughter was just getting into his stride when he was caught behind off a top edge, leaving him staggering despondently back to the changing rooms with 53 from 29 deliveries.
After Qamar departed, caught behind Piri and Asad enjoyed a four over partnership before the latter was caught at square leg. The final score was 97 all out; Old Actonians 2nd XI lost by 119.
The captain gave these words on the victory: “It happened. We’ve just got to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Man of the match went to Piradeepan Sivanathan for his tight bowling figures and a sensible display of batting.
