Scorecard

Bessborough 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 24 Jun 2017 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 9 wickets

Match report This week saw a meeting of the 2 teams who lost on adjoining pitches the week before at The Paulin. Thankfully the temperatures had relented so Nathan's decision to field first again was fully justified.

The Kiwi boys, no doubt buoyed by the rugby result earlier, came storming in but early wickets proved elusive. In fact Bessborough got off to a flier with the opening partnership worth 83 before we struck eventually in the 16th over. TP was the man who struck and it was his lengthy but fruitful spell that swung the game our way. He does not bowl with great pace but just gets enough movement to command the respect of batsman and more importantly he bowls straight!! That said he did get the other opener with a pie well caught by Lewis. Will then won a LBW decision during a much improved spell of 8 overs as wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Bessborough found themselves 167 for 9 in the 36th but their number 10 hit a useful 23 before TP returned to claim his 6th wicket. 4 of which were bowled. So eventually we got them out for 193 which appeared eminently gettable on a good pitch and quick outfield that slopes in all directions.

Maben had a new opening partner this week in the form of "2 metre" Charlie and they had to face a testing spell from there new ball bowler. In fact he did for Charlie in the 5th over to leave us 13 for 1. Thereafter it became a case of seeing him off and cashing in. That is exactly what Messrs Maben and Lambert did. Defend the good ones, put away the bad......common sense batting at its best. At drinks they had taken the score to 107 after 25 overs and in the 5 overs afterwards, a further 45 were scored as they accelerated to the winning target. A partnership of 184 and 10 points in the bag. Andrew finished on 85 and Lewis on 93 with last weeks centurion, Abhay, not required.

So a game that threatened to get away from us at the start was reeled back in and won with some ease. That said we need to stop giving away so many extras ( oppos top score and not for the first time this season).

On a lighter note........it was interesting to see Aneeq bowling seam after years of watching him send down his Bertie Basset liquorice all sorts leg spin! He actually bowled 3 very tidy overs. Not sure about the long run up though bearing in mind the stutter before the crease and the lack of a follow through! He does however remain something of a lucky charm for the 3s in recent times as we always win when he plays. Strange but true....

Also worthy of mention was a fine piece of chasing down by Vaughan when he stopped the ball going over the rope. Unfortunately in the act of getting up off the floor, he then kicked the ball for four! Line out to Bessborough......

After 2 weeks on the road we are back at Boddingtons to play Enfield next week which will mark the end of the 1st half of the season. Fourth in the league represents a decent return but scope for improvement.
