Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Bessborough 3 on Sat 26 Aug 2017 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 7 wickets
Match report
After last weeks loss against Winchmore the mighty 3s simply had to win their last 2 games and hope other results go their way. For our last home game of the season we welcomed bottom of the league Bessborough. No Stud this week so I was wearing the "armband" and I thought it best not to mention the fact I had never captained an Actonians team to a win before! The toss was lost but their skipper was in a bit of a quandary as to what to do. Last week he put Hampstead in and they conceded 300+. No surprise then that we ended up bowling. The pitch was the same one as last week with the grass a bit shorter but little evidence of it being rolled as you could see the dents caused by bowlers last week!!
We had to take to the field with 10 as Andrew offered to wash the plates etc that were minging having been put away when damp by the Sunday team. More on that later! Anyway Piri and Vaughan took the new cherry and both looked threatening in bowler friendly conditions. Piri got the breakthrough when one of their openers played on but their other opener looked a very good player (got 80 odd against us last season) and their number 3 started to put away anything loose for 4. They reached about 40 for 1 when I decided on a double bowling change with Lord Whear and TP coming on. 3 quick wickets followed all caught in the slips with Huggy clinging on to 2 and Ollie "1 Direction" West claiming the other. The wickets continued to fall with Dave finding himself on a hat trick in what turned out to be his last over. Their last batsman looked like a walking wicket but a full toss outside off stump ensured a jug was avoided! TP soon got the last man (we only needed to take 8 as they had 9 men) which prevented Whear Junior turning his arm.
83 was the target then as we agreed to turn straight round. The old firm of Andrew and 2 Metre opened up and Andrew creamed the 5th ball of the innings through extra cover for 4. Unfortunately their skipper fell very awkwardly in attempting to stop it and was clearly in great discomfort. The game was duly held up for sometime and tea was taken. When the innings resumed Asif went out to field for them and their bowlers made life difficult for us. Andrew and Charlie were both bowled in successive overs to leave us 19 for 2. Abhay and Ollie managed to see off the openers and once the change bowlers came on Abhay tucked in to what amounted to a help yourself buffet. The end was soon nigh although Abhay holed out at the end going for the glory shot to end it.
A very comfortable win then but sad to see Bessborough going through such a difficult time. We were back to the club to see the 1s just come up short in their run chase (distinct lack of nerdling cost you fellas on a slow wicket!). Promotion though looking highly unlikely as Harrow Town beat champions Hampstead. We now need them to lose to Bessborough and Indian Gymkhana to go down to Winchmore. The latter is possible but the former.......?
Schlong de la Jour? Had to be Maben Senior for managing to miss the first 9 overs of the match through his extended washing up session. We thought he would perhaps miss a couple or so but as each over went by the teams attitude changed as follows:
Over 1- what a guy doing the washing up. Club man of the year surely?
Over 2- still doing a good job but hope to see you soon old boy.
Over 3- nearly finished? Could do with another close catcher.
Over 4- have we got that many plates? He's still in the kitchen.
Over 5- What's he doing in there? Get a shift on......
Over 6- thank god he's no longer in the kitchen. Won't be long now.
Over 7- still in the changing room? Is he moisturising or what?
Over 8- for fu*** sake where the bloody hell is he?
Over 9- he appears at last after the first ball has been bowled. A wicket is taken and on he comes. Hello stranger!
Onwards to Enfield for our last game of what has been a very enjoyable season. Let's make sure we finish on a high note.
