Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v North London 4 on Sat 05 May 2018 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 8 wickets
Match report
Having just missed out on promotion last season the 3s are rightly looking forward to this one with a good deal of optimism as we welcomed North London to Boddingtons. The outfield looked in very good nick for early May and the green wicket at least had consistent bounce albeit somewhat on the low side! It was never going to be a very high scoring game. The skipper, donning a sailors hat, won the toss and not surprisingly elected to bowl first. Nathan himself took the new ball with Andrew “don’t be fooled by the grey hair I am the younger brother” Thompson. Both probed away menacingly (rather like Marcus and Lewis at the Chatsworth) and the skip broke through when their young left handed gloved a leg side catch to the VC. Fair play to the young man for not waiting for the umpire to give him out. North London found it heavy going and it was not going to get any easier when Shaun Qamar came on. He bowled his 10 overs and took a miserly 2 for 15. He bowled their other opener and number 3 and from then on when never really relinquished control of the match. Idris bowled some useful deliveries in his spell but is clearly a bit rusty. Sahil came on and took 2 quick wickets. The second of which was the result of an absolute barnstormer of a catch from the returning Tommy Byrne who leapt at cover and pulled one out of the sky one handed much to the astonishment of all those present. Hard to imagine we will see a better one all season. Tommy himself had a tweak and snared a couple of wickets as North London lost their last 5 wickets for 6 runs. Sahil added another with Andrew taking a well deserved wicket with the last ball of his last over.
So 116 was the target and although the pitch was not conducive to free flowing strokeplay, it was not difficult to bat time and with 45 overs to get them, sensible batting was the order of the day. After a good tea prepared by Captain Birdseye, we sent out the odd couple in the shape of 2 Metre Charlie and Maben Senior. There opening bowlers did not give much away and one in particular was quite sharp and gave all batsmen he bowled to something to think about. Andrew fell in the 5th over when he was bowled trying to pull a delivery that to be fair pitched halfway down the track. Bit unfortunate but Boddingtons not a good place for that shot! Idris came out to join Charlie and after an understandably scratchy start, he played some very authoritative strokes particularly down the ground. The pair put on 55 for the 2nd wicket before Charlie holed out when letting those long levers loose. Asif then ensured there were few alarms (apart from that wild slog when he tried to finish the game in style!) as he and Idris saw us home with 16 overs to spare.
So a very satisfying way to start this campaign but tougher assignments await in the coming weeks starting at Kenton next week. Very good debuts from Sahil and Idris and great to have Tommy Byrne back in what was his 3rd team debut.
Schlong de la jour? Very few candidates this week but the skipper must get it for that hat. He passed it off as a Kane Williamson tribute but it was more Village People/ Lionel Blair!
