Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 5 wickets
Match report
The 3s went into this game against the Tamils unbeaten and confident despite the numerous changes forced upon us by unavailability higher up. We were however fortunate to be able to call upon the likes of H and Ali Slaughter so surely we had enough to beat a side looking for its 1st win of the season. Well the oppo looked a bit of a rabble with only 7 present just before the start time and it was no surprise they put us in on winning the toss. By the time the 1st ball was bowled they had 9 and the other 2 came onto the field at the start of the 2nd. Meantime Chaz arrived in the pimpmobile so we too were up to our full compliment.
With Arkwright called into the 2s to resume his previously “anti” prolific partnership with all rounder Parker, Tas was sent into open with 2 Metre. A fine job they did too putting on 43 before Tas fell in the 11th over. Charlie again looked in fine nick and it came as a bit of a shock when he played all round one with the score on 62. Idris and Shahid then went about rebuilding the innings on what was a slow and sticky Boddingtons track. They batted sensibly and at 107 for 2 after 28 overs, we were set for another good total. However once both set batsmen departed in quick succession, carnage ensued.
H, Chaz and Ali all came and went in the blink of an eye, then Aneeq, trying to play sensibly ( I know, what was he thinking?), managed to spoon one up with the back of his bat to slip when trying to leave one alone. Sahil played round a straight one first ball which meant the skipper was in on a hat-trick ball. He duly kept that out and now it was done to him and the VC to try and post a defendable total at 120 for 9! With their contrasting batting styles runs started to flow with Nathan using his whippy bottom hand to good effect. However having smoked 2 fine boundaries he was bowled the next ball and we had to settle for 139. We criminally failed to bat our quota of 45 overs and the pitch, although not that easy to score on, was not a 139 all out wicket. What went wrong? I think we will point the finger at “No Nick” Clark and Kevin Mahoney whose arrival seemed to spark it all off!
We had much to ponder at tea (a fine one supplied by the skipper) and we were going to have to bowl out of our skins. Nathan gave an impassioned speech and talked about making Boddingtons a fortress. So we popped down to B and Q for masonry and tools but our attempts to build moats, turrets etc was ultimately foiled by a bowling display that contained more pies than a Pukka delivery lorry. We did however pick up 2 early wickets with the skipper and Tas gaining LBW verdicts to leave them 24 for 2. That brought in Russell Arnold’s brother who proceeded to punish all the loose stuff that was generously served up. Their number 3 kept him company and when he was out for 16, the score was 98. Golden arm Slaughter persuaded him to leave a straight one and picked up another soon after. He then ran out the number 6 at the bowlers end with a throw from fine leg! That was as good as it got though and the Tamils scored the runs with all of 19 overs to spare. Their number 4 ended up 73 not out and had a field day. We couldn’t pick up the 6th wicket to earn a measly point and that completed a bad day at the office.
Not many positives to take from this one as we never recovered from the batting collapse. We need to show a bit more savvy in the coming weeks to get back on track. Schlong de la Jour has to go to Aneeq for bringing his electronic body massager which bore an uncanny resemblance to a dildo. I think it was the same one Delboy used on Uncle Albert! Anyway it did H no good but there again I don’t think it is a known cure for a hangover???!! The highlight of the day has to go to Ali Slaughters blue tartan 3 piece suit as worn by Les Dawson in the 70s. Whatever it was it cannot seemed to be a lucky suit so don’t wear it again Ali!
