Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Enfield 3 on Sat 23 Jun 2018 at 12.30pm
Match was Drawn Winning Draw

Match report With Idris moved up to the 2s this week after his strong start to the season, the 3s were able to welcome back Piri to bolster the attack and 2 club stalwarts in the not too inconsiderable shapes of Robbo and Juan Pablo Olly West. The opposition were Enfield who were youthful and lacking in players able to vote! The oppo won the toss and put us in which was no bad thing on a very warm day with the now customary fast Boddingtons outfield.

Arkwright and 2 Metre then set about putting together an opening partnership to set us up for a big total. Andrew in particular was in ebullient mood as he started to find the boundary regularly after a steady start. The pair put on 94 when Andrew got bowled off the last ball of the 20th over just before drinks. This brought in Huggy who had time to play himself in as Charlie went through the gears. Just as he seemed set for a big score he managed to club a full toss of their young spinner to square leg where the bowlers dad dived and took a great catch. This brought in Robbo and some sensible batting took us to 173 for 2. Unfortunately the word sensible cannot be used for what happened next. Enfield brought a bowler who would have taken the new ball if he hadn’t arrived late and we managed to lose 3 wickets in his first over. First to go was Huggy who clothed a full toss to mid wicket off a no ball, he then called for a run that was not there, was rightly sent back, but was run out! By the 5th ball Robbo was on strike but he was out LBW and the same fate befell Shahid the very next ball. We were now 174 for 5 and our innings was in the balance. Piri and Olly did well to get us back on track and past 200 when Olly went for an ambitious swish over cover and got caught. Junior got a blob but VC, in Jos Buttler mode, got a cheeky 19 not out to enable us to declare after 46 overs on 242.

The news at tea was that Robbo had pulled a hamstring. Can’t say I noticed this when he was batting as it didn’t appear to affect his “speed” between the wickets! Luckily for us the Ginger Ensom was on hand to come on and be our Garry Pratt in the role as substitute fielder. Good to have Piri back to share the new ball with Junior and he struck early on when he got a delivery to rise and take the glove of their opener. Huggy ran round behind VC and took a comfortable catch. Junior then got their other opener to nick off so at 30 for 2 we were sniffing a long awaited win. However their number 3, by far their best player, batted extremely well and with good support from the middle order, Enfield batted themselves into a comfortable position. Thankfully we started taking wickets before they could entertain thoughts of chasing down our total. The Qamars bowled steadily although Huggy tended to get wickets with Halal Chicken Balti pies! Olly also dobbed to good effect to give us some semblance of control. A late flurry of wickets made it look like we nearly closed the deal but we needed 3 wickets off the final over. Sahil struck with the first ball and had a catch dropped next ball. The 9th wicket fell on the last ball of the match and we had to settle for a winning draw.

Overall a decent performance by the 3s especially with the bat. Our bowling however still lacking both consistency and penetration. Ooh errr missus! The fielding also looked a bit arthritic at times and that’s something we can improve on. Big thanks to Richard Thistlethwaite for helping out in the field.

Man of the match has to be 2 Metre for a fine 61 but Schlong de la Jour...........well on Saturday I did give it to Andrew for getting out the ball before drinks and tripping over in the field necessitating a dive for the ball head first! However there has been a VAR review! Huggy getting run out off a no ball has just been pipped by Robbo who enquired if we normally have a warm up before the game. Clearly this is in relation to his pulled hammie. Well Robboooo, I’m not sure how that would have helped you with you having to wait an hour and half with your pads on waiting to bat!!

Onwards then to Crouch End next week chaps.......
