North London 4 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 07 Jul 2018 at 11am
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 5 wickets
Match report
One of those days that will live in the memory for various reasons, the 3s found themselves back in North London to play a club of the same name. Despite the early start the temperature was still on the sweaty side of warm so the skipper elected to bat first on what looked like a “road” on their tiny second ground. No 2 Metre this week so Arkwright and Robboooow had the job of laying the foundations for a big score. However both nicked off in the opening overs leaving us 36 for 2. This was the prelude to an innings by Huggy of gargantuan proportions full of bottom handed pyrotechnics and timing that consisted of 18 4s and 14 6s! He was well supported by Juan Pablo who just played his own game and was run out for 47. The pair had put on 204 in 28 overs. RJ then came in and joined in the fun with his 35 not out including 3 consecutive 6s as 80 runs came off the last 5 overs. The declaration came at 44 overs setting North London 321 to win. We had about 40 minutes before the break for tea/ football and Nathan managed to get one through their skippers defences to leave them 38 for 1.
The problem with a 2 hour break in proceedings is that it gives the chance for players to consider where they are in their lives and ponder the difficulties facing the world today. We were all worried about the Cabinet meeting at Chequers discussing the Brexit deal and the shortage of CO2 affecting drink supplies. Yes England had won but the 3s are deep thinkers.......... Subsequent resignations of Johnson and Davis confirmed our fears and what is the future for our kids??
It’s not working is it? You can’t bury bad news when the scorecard is staring at you! That said skipper Mehaffy was grateful l for the England win as Theresa desperately needs Harry to lift the trophy! How did we lose this one? Well the pitch was a road and the outfield small and fast but we collectively did have a shocker. Their number 3 played aggressively and got them off to a flier and at 166 for 3 North London were looking safe at least. However their young number 5 came in and played the innings of his life. He looked a bit scratchy to start but he was soon peppering the offside boundary as we struggled to bowl dot balls. They needed 80 off the last 10 and bearing in mind what we got that off the last 5 it was clear we were in trouble. They kept getting a boundary early in just about every over and with the field set back we able to keep up with the rate comfortably. They got there with 2 overs and 2 balls to spare. To be fair to them a great run chase and very well played the young man who made 95.
Schlong de la Jour? Despite his monumental innings it has to go to Huggy for his girlie screech when their batsman hit the ball in the air but not particularly close to any fielders! That said we still worship the ground you walk on!
The 3s need to regroup and I’m sure we will. Junior can console himself that he doesn’t have Theresa Mays job!
Lastly a lot has been made of the fact few of the England squad were alive when we last reached a World Cup semi. Well all of the 3s were around!
