Harrow Town 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 21 Jul 2018 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 4 wickets
Match report
The 3s found themselves taking on a Harrow Town side this week who are top of the division and threatening to run away with it. That said we are the only team to have beaten them so far (not sure if I mentioned it but I captained that day!) but we are on a lengthy winless run at the moment. The oppo won the toss and is customary it seems, they invited us to bat.
No Arkwright this week so Aneeq opened with 2 Metre and they were to be against an opening bowler who started the season as their 1st team overseas. However due to a plethora of overseas in their ranks, he has been playing for the 3s lately and had taken 22 wickets in 4 games. Not a bad return. It soon became clear why had managed to run through teams in this division. He is a left armer who bowled at a speed rarely seen in 3rd team cricket. Charlie and Aneeq managed to survive his opening couple of overs but Aneeq got bowled by the other opener who had all sorts of problems with no balls. That brought in Huggy who quickly kicked into his usual gear. At the other end Charlie seemed to get stuck at pacy boys end and he wore a few on his thigh that was not padded! Still Charlie did a great job for the team and saw him off. These two put on 55 before 2 Metre nicked off to their keeper who it turned out is the grumpiest man in Middlesex cricket! Did have much positive to say to his team mates who must be wondering what he would be like if they were bottom of the league!
Anyway this brought in Shahid, promoted up the order, who proceeded to play easily his best innings for the 3s so far. Losing Huggy with the score on 82 was a blow but Shahid made up for it with a well paced innings that enabled us to post a decent score on a pitch that was on the slow side. Rakesh, on debut, gave him great support and they put on 68 for the 4th wicket. 3 quick wickets then threatened to derail us as Corporal Jones and Sam Boughton both fell cheaply deceived by the aforementioned slowness of the pitch. At 155 for 6 VC came into join Shahid with a possible 11 overs still to bat. A useful partnership of 30 then ensued with VC providing 20 of them before he was caught on the mid wicket boundary (a rare mode of dismissal for a nerdler). Shahid soon fell for a well played 78 and we ended up with 210 as we were bowled out in the 50th over.
At tea it was good to see the surprise on faces in their clubhouse when informed that their wicket machine went wicketless so a moral victory for us there! Harrow had 42 overs to get the runs and although the pitch was quite slow, the outfield was lightning fast as they all are presently. Keir took the new ball with young Sam as we created chances early on. Sam was unlucky in particular as one of their openers was the reckless side of aggressive. Keir struck when the other opener mistimed one to bucket hands Price at mid on but runs were coming at a quick rate and it was clear we would need to bowl them out. Huggy was brought on to take pace off the ball and he snared the other opener and when the skipper removed their number 4, they were 90 for 3. Their very capable number 3 was then joined by the wicket machine who could clearly strike a long ball. Their partnership moved the score swiftly to 163 when Shaun, in the midst of a fine spell, persuaded the number 3 to play on and found the outside edge of the other. Aneeq came on to bowl his leg spin and after a shoulder high first ball, he settled down to bowl a good spell that helped stem the runs. However Captain Grumpy came in to play a nerve settling knock to see them home but not before Shahid came on for his first 3rd team bowl and took a wicket first ball!
A defeat then but on the whole a good effort against a side who will no doubt win this league. We did again drop too many catches but thanks mainly to Shahid we did post a good total and it was an improved bowling display on the whole.
Schlong de la Jour? Really tough one this week but will have to go to Aneeq for buying a Nissan Juke that refused to start after the game!!
