Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Winchmore Hill 3 on Sat 28 Jul 2018 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 99 runs
Match report
Having played the top two sides the 3s found themselves up against Winchmore Hill this week who are invariably strong at this point in the season. Our win at their place remains our last successful outing as we have found ourselves slip down the table at a rather alarming rate. Anyway this week the skipper won the toss and invited the Hill to have first use of this Boddingtons surface that looked reasonable (relatively speaking!). With Keir taking his driving test this week we welcomed back Piri who took the new ball with Sam “the future 2 Metre” Boughton. There was some swing early on with some invariable bounce which made life tricky for their openers and Piri duly picked the skipper when he scooped one to Hamza at mid on. That brought in their number 3 who was clearly more capable than most batsman in this division. He was particularly harsh on young Sam as the offside boundary got a peppering. They raced to 60 for 1 off 10 overs when Junior turned to Hamza who proceeded to initiate a clatter of wickets. Having bowled the other opener he persuaded the number 4 to hit his wicket first ball. Their number 3 then played an ambitious sweep behind square when Shaun snared the catch. Hamza then picked up two more to leave Winchmore 110 for 6 and we were very much in the ascendancy. However their lower order proved more than up to the task of rebuilding and then providing a flurry of late boundaries which enabled them to post 219 all out in the 47th over. We didn’t bowl that badly but we did shell a couple of catches that would have limited the damage. Hamza finished off the innings to bring his haul to 7. Comfortably the best bowling performance seen in the 3s this season. Piri was also very good taking 2-25 in his 8 overs.
So we had a winning target of 220 in 45 overs but not before we enjoyed the first Karen tea of the season! Olly wisely decided not to over indulge as we opening the batting with 2 Metre. He kept back a healthy volume of food for scoffing down after his innings. Unfortunately this scoffing session began rather sooner than we would have liked as he perished in the first over when he was unfortunate to get one that popped off a decent length and took his glove to give slip a simple catch. Huggy then came in to join Charlie as Winchmore’s new ball pairing continued to cause difficulties with consistent lines and lengths making full use of the vagaries of Boddingtons. Huggy was out in similar vein to Olly and last weeks hero Shahid fell cheaply to leave us 39 for 3. Golden Arm Hamza then joined Charlie as the oppo put on spin at both ends. They took the score to 80 before both fell in quick succession. The innings then began to peter out as the Hill continued to bowl with great consistency. To be honest I think we were entitled to a few pies here and there but they weren’t having it!!
We were eventually all out when another ball popped up to take Shaun’s glove and another dolly to slip was duly gratefully received. Well beaten then on the day against a side who would be in the top two if they could field this side every week. Best forget about this one chaps and get ready for a must win at the Tamils next week.
Schlong de la Jour? The skipper owned up to this one this week as he boldly predicted one of the great rear guard actions with the last wicket at the crease. Shaun and VC had 12 more overs to survive........but Shaun fell the very next ball!
Finally we bid farewell, for this season anyway, to Olly “Juan Pablo” West who has now returned to Colombia. As always it’s been great to have him around and his knowledge of the South American commodities markets has proved invaluable. Unlike his dobbers! Adios old boy and hope to see you again next season.
