Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Edmonton 3 on Sat 12 May 2018 at 12.30pm
Match was Abandoned

Match report The league season got off to a belated start with the visit of Edmonton after last week’s early concession victory. The theme of this week’s match report is potential cut short. We’ve been waiting for such a long time for so many things but sadly they’ve not really caught fire.

After our promotion push being cut short at the final hurdle last year and Roger’s retirement which lasted about a month we approached the new season bouncing with spring freshness. The team sheet had a selection of fourth team stalwarts and new faces with league debuts for Taz, and Rakesh.

We started in a promising way with a wicket from Scotty’s first ball of the season. However as the boundaries began flowing we realised that even the grass had been cut short. Dave also took an opener clean bowled but some lusty hitting from their number 3 needed a response. Cue the spin trio of Will, Tim and Taz putting the squeeze on as the weather made the pitch trickier and the ball like a bar of soap.

Appeals were cut short by some very questionable umpiring. Smithy was unlucky to have an lbw turned down that was only missing leg stump because it was hitting the middle of middle and Tim had a caught behind not given that fielders at the main ground were appealing for.

Only two batsman got to grips with the conditions and the wickets tumbled as steadily as the rain. Special mention needs to go to Tim’s all action performance with 2 (3 really) wickets, a run out and two catches. At tea we were looking well set with Edmonton all out for 144.

The rain had never really stopped throughout the day and a rapid start between MS Jonesy and Bobby saw us reach 34-0 off 5 overs. With no prospect of them winning the game Edmonton found the conditions not to their liking. Despite the way the game was poised with Actonians pushing very strongly for a win it was difficult to argue that we could continue in what was now steady rain and so the Actonians run chase was cut short.

Despite the lawyerly whiles of Dave and Will’s classically trained rhetoric trying to sway Edmonton’s captain the rain had the final say. Whilst at times it got lighter it never really stopped and we were 15 overs short of a game when the two captains shook hands on a draw.

There had been much anticipation of my match reports after last year’s initial forays into increasingly bizarre genre pieces but sadly with so little material even my match reports have been ultimately cut sho…
