SKLP 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 31 Aug 2019 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 8 wickets
Match report
After last weeks gargantuan win over Wycombe House the 3s knew one more win from our remaining two games would guarantee our survival in division 4. This week saw us make the relatively short trip to North Acton Playing Fields to take on SKLP who themselves were one of five teams right in the promotion hunt. They were there very early while we took the slightly more laid back approach but mostly arriving in shortly before the start. It should be said that the gate near the changing rooms was jammed so an alternative means of entry had to be sought. Anyway the skipper’s mood was again on the tetchy side but he cheered up when he lost the toss and the oppo took the bold step to bat first. The wicket looked ok but this ground is not exactly renowned for being a batsman’s paradise!
Super Nathan and Sivanathan took the new ball and it soon became apparent that this was not going to be a high scoring game. Nathan got one of the openers to nick off in his second over. The number 3 spooned one off Piri to Vidal at mid on and when their number 4 chopped one on from Nathan, the oppo found themselves 11 for 3. A combination of good bowling, seam movement and variable bounce put all sorts of doubts into the SKLP batsmen. The other opener played Piri patiently seeing off 4 maidens in a row but he then played a loose one to Mike Caufield who defied his testicular issues to dive to his left to take a fine catch. At the 20 over mark they were 47 for 7 and by the time both bowlers bowled their allotment of 12 overs SKLP were 61 for 7. A little partnership was starting to develop but TP mopped up the tail taking the final 3 wickets in quick time with the help of 2 catches pouched by H. A great bowling effort in helpful conditions and an almost immaculate fielding display with just the one dropped catch by Aneeq ( well he didn’t pay me enough not to mention it!) very late in their innings.
We then had an alfresco tea which was made tricky by the ever increasing windy conditions but Arkwright and 2 Metre were soon out in the gathering gloom to set off us on the road to glory and survival. Both opening bowlers bowled testing spells without reward as our batsmen rightly played with a good deal of caution. The run rate was around 3 an over and by the time Charlie was out the score was on 42 and over half way to the target. Andrew fell 11 runs later but Aneeq and Mike quickly wrapped things up with the latter hitting the winning runs in the 24th over. In fairness to SKLP they made us work hard for the runs but a couple of dropped catches meant the run chase was relatively stress free.
So the 3s can now look forward to their last game at home to Crouch End next week knowing Wycombe House can no longer catch us despite their own win last Saturday. Man of the match has to be a joint award this week going to Nathan and Piri. Schlong de la Jour? A few candidates this week. Nathan for congratulating Charlie on taking a catch when Sahil had taken it, Aneeq for winding up the oppo after getting dropped but the winner is H for trying to throw down the stumps at the bowlers end after taking a catch! He claimed he was in LMS mode....... Finally a special mention to Mike Caufield for playing this week after taking a nasty blow in the unmentionables last week, having an operation in the week, but still playing this week despite feeling a bit weak!
The 3s would also like to pass their best wishes to 1s skipper Mad Dog and wish him a speedy recovery after his operation.
