Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Twickenham 4 on Sat 18 Jul 2020 at 12.00noon
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 7 wickets
Match report
For the first match of this somewhat truncated season the 3s welcomed newly promoted Twickenham to Boddingtons. Pre match the big questions where, would the new skipper “ The Assassin” win the toss? What would the wicket look like? What shorts will Will Yates turn up in? The answers were, no, ok by Boddingtons modest standards, and a pair that George Michael in his early Wham days might have considered before ultimately saying no to keep his dignity!
The oppo not surprisingly put us in and we sent out the recent recruit to the Quinquagenarian Club, Maben Sr, and the Big Show, Aneeq, to face the music. One or two balls did misbehave but thankfully their opening bowlers were military medium. Aneeq actually played quite sensibly to start with and aided by extras and some trademark Maben expansive drives our opening partnership started to flourish. They took the score to 48 before Aneeq was clean bowled attempting to flay their young first change bowler towards the main ground. One of our debutants, Saranjeet, came in at 3 and he helped Andrew out in a further 50 before he was adjudged LBW. 108 for 2 after 20 overs represented a very good start. Will then came in at 4 but just when he and Andrew looked like they might take the game away from Twickenham, his senior partner called for a run that was never there and was duly run out. After that our innings somewhat spluttered as their spinners pulled things back nicely for them. Will himself was run out and only Saurabh with a well played 32 hung around for a decent length of time. In fact we got bowled out with just under 4 overs remaining for 197. Still at Boddingtons that always takes a bit of getting.
The skipper took the new ball with young Jake Jerome and both bowled well without looking overly threatening. That said we did drop one of their openers twice which allowed to get a similar start to us. Their opening partnership realised 57 when Saranjeet picked up has first wicket. We toiled for a while after that until the Big Show came onto bowl and he persuaded their number 3 to miss a full toss to gain a LBW decision. He then picked up the other opener who danced down the wicket and missed one that turned about...aw I don’t know.......about 0 degrees and bowled him! At 100 for 3 we were still in the game but their numbers 4 and 5 played sensibly and without much alarm to see them home with over 3 overs to go.
Losing is always disappointing but plenty of positives to take us forward. Debutants Saranjeet, Rob, Saurabh and Jake all look welcome additions and it won’t take a massive improvement to enable the 3s to notch up a few wins. Man of the Match goes to Maben Sr for his 46 with Schlong de la Jour going to Will Yates for nearly showing us his Schlong in those shorts!
