Brentham IV v Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 14 May 2022 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 120 runs
Match report
The 4s found themselves at William Perkins School this week to play local rivals Brentham. We had a strong looking side loaded with experience and just a merest suggestion of youth! Roheet won the toss and refused to invoke the rule of Smithy so we batted first on what looked like a good pitch with an outfield tinged with brown already.
The cack handed pair of Maben and Wilcox opened up against a new ball attack that was gentle in pace but both got enough wobble to keep them honest. Andrew looked in decent touch but kept finding fielders. His patience ran out when he struck an airy drive to cover to leave us 22 for 1. This brought in Ben Bell who started a bit frantically but both realised that they just had to wait for the odd bad ball and the large fast outfield would duly reward them. Ben and Luke ran well between the wickets and Brentham started to wilt somewhat in the heat. They put on over a hundred for the 2nd wicket before Ben got stumped for a well made 41. The foundations had been well and truly built for a large total and all the middle order scored at least a run a ball in support of Luke who continued to find the gaps and run aggressively. After Lord Whear nicked off Will made 43 off 26 balls before he trampled on his stumps. Rakesh then joined the party with a very handy 39 while Luke made it through to his well earned hundred. A bit scratchy to start he soon found his rhythm and played to his strengths. A perfect knock that saw him anchor the innings through the full 45 overs. Well played sir. “All rounder” RJ (we need a stewards at this listing in the fantasy game) was promoted above me presumably to give it the long handle. Well he decided to nurdle it through 3rd man every other ball. I could have done that! Anyway we finished on 330 which is a record score for the 4th XI. The innings took an age to complete which was not helped by the fact 2 drinks breaks were taken (understandably so) and everyone had to go into the changing rooms to get their own as the oppo didn’t provide any refreshments.
Nathan and Omar opened up with the latter striking in his opening over when a gained a LBW decision over their keeper who was generally not a happy man. This did little to brighten his outlook (as we would find out later). Their skipper started to find his range with some lusty leg side blows before he nicked off to Nathan. Their number 3 hadn’t played for sometime apparently but he looked technically proficient scoring 46 before he top edged a delivery off the “Dartist” formerly known as RJ! Their middle order all got themselves in and batted quite well but they were never going to threaten our score. Their keeper returned to umpire and rather eccentrically wided Wills first two deliveries. The first missed leg stump but beat the batsman on the inside when giving himself room, and the second was a sort of bouncer that I took chest high. Wisely they replaced him and calm was restored. The skipper came on and picked up a couple of wickets and Omar came back, bowling with decent pace, to also pick up two further wickets. Our outfielding was very good but we did put down a few catches which we can ill afford to do in tighter games. They managed to bat out their full allocation albeit 120 runs shy of our total.
Man of the match? A tricky one this week but Luke just edges it for his 130 not out! Schlong de la jour? Will was a candidate for trampling on his stumps in mid flow but I’m giving it to my best man Andrew for overuse of the word “awesome”. I don’t want to hear it in your speech even if you’re describing me!
So the 4s are up and running and with every reason to be optimistic about the rest of the season.
