Scorecard
Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Harrow St Mary's IV on Sat 27 Aug 2022 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 47 runs
Match report
In their penultimate match of the season the 4s were at Boddingtons for their final home game against relegation threatened Harrow St Mary’s. As for ourselves we had to win to maintain any hope of promotion and hope at least one of the top two lost. The oppo won the toss and put us in. It’s what Slowheet was going to do anyway as we’ve won our last three batting first.
Two Metre and Maben Senior found themselves opening the batting bringing memories of their 3s glory days during the Mehaffy regime. Against a good young pair of bowlers they had to play with a certain amount of circumspection. However Charlie got beaten by one that opened him up like a tin of sardines with the score on 27 which brought in H whose appearances this season have been limited by his ageing failing frail frame! Along with Andrew they put together a very handy partnership of 67 which laid a solid foundation on a pitch that although better than most we have played on here, was nonetheless pretty slow and difficult to score freely on. Andrew fell to their young spinner which was the first of his five for and as we tried to press the accelerator pedal, we lost a cluster of wickets to find ourselves 137-6. Thankfully H was still there biffing it’s in that V that is his scoring zone. His half century included 4 maximums as he held the innings together. The scorecard shows he got 75 but this may have been exaggerated slightly due to the non appearance of my one boundary! For the 2nd time this season (and it’s not been a prolific one) one of my fours has mysteriously failed to appear against my name. It wasn’t even scored in H’s V so how this could have occurred I really don’t know. My innings was actually cut short by Rocket Ronit’s liberal interpretation of the LBW law but we did at least managed to get close to 200 as Lord Whear and Roheet scrambled their way through the closing overs.
After tea the new ball was shared by Omer and Raj who both bowled well without much luck. Omer kept beating the outside edge and Raj got some nice shape back into the right handers. What we needed was some medium paced poo to get the breakthrough. Luckily the skipper brought himself on and first ball almost enticed a catch with a full toss. He thought that bloody well nearly worked. Let’s have another go. So he did and this time the opener clinked a full toss straight to Andrew G. Later that over the number 3 nicked off to me to make it a double breakthrough. The remaining opener started to play with greater belligerence as HSM managed to get to drinks at 82-2 and were in a seemingly good position. After drinks Ronit and Andrew G were now bowling in tandem and soon the game swung in our favour. Ronit got the opener LBW and Andrew ripped through the middle order leaving the oppo trying to get a losing point that might help them stay up. Unfortunately for them they clearly had no geeks of Raj’s calibre as their maths, like Slowheet’s chat up lines, were not up to scratch! They seemed to think getting to 150 was enough but they actually needed 158 to reach the 80% mark. Anyway Omer picked up 3 late wickets and Lord Whear defied stiffness to return and pick up the final wicket.
A win then by 47 runs but news from the other games was not positive as both West Harrow and Chiswick won. Still we can reflect on a very good season and we are guaranteed to finish 3rd. Man of the match has to got to H for his fine knock of 70 odd with Schlong de la Jour going to Ronit who enquired as to the whereabouts of the bails after the match had started! Nothing to do with his trigger finger. Onwards to the Titans next week and a positive performance to top off an enjoyable season.
